Easy Tuna Curry Rice Bowl Recipe
Here’s a fantastic tuna curry rice bowl recipe you can whip up easily with canned tuna and basic vegetables. It’s a delicious one-bowl meal perfect for special occasions or busy weeknight dinners. Served over rice, it’s a satisfying and filling meal.
Main Ingredients- 1 packet curry powder (choose your favorite kind)
- 1 can (small size) tuna (drain excess oil)
- 2 potatoes (medium-sized)
- 1 onion (large)
- 5 cups warm water (approx. 1000ml)
- 3 Tbsp cooking oil (approx. 45ml)
- Warm cooked rice (as much as you like)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, let’s start with prepping the vegetables, the foundation of this dish! Peel the onion, trim the ends, and dice it into approximately 0.5-1cm cubes. Dicing them too small can cause them to break down when sautéing, so aim for a consistent, moderate size.
Step 2
Wash the potatoes thoroughly, peel them, and dice them into cubes similar in size to the onions. If the potato pieces are too large, they’ll take longer to cook, so it’s important to ensure all ingredients cook at a similar pace.
Step 3
Get a deep pan or pot ready and add 3 tablespoons of cooking oil. Once the pan is heated over medium heat, add the diced onions. Sauté them until they become golden brown and release a sweet aroma, which should take about 7-8 minutes. Sautéing the onions sufficiently will significantly deepen the curry’s flavor.
Step 4
Once the onions are nicely browned, add the diced potatoes to the pan and sauté them together. Cook for about 3-4 minutes, until the surface of the potatoes looks slightly translucent or is coated in oil. This sautéing step adds a delicious depth of flavor to the potatoes.
Step 5
Now it’s time to add the water. Pour 3 cups of warm water (approx. 600ml) into the pot and bring it to a boil over high heat. Once boiling, reduce the heat to medium and let it simmer for about 10-15 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender when pierced with a fork. (Adjust cooking time based on the size of your vegetables.)
Step 6
When the potatoes are almost cooked through, add the drained canned tuna. Let it simmer for a short while longer to allow the flavors to meld together.
Step 7
Once the vegetables are tender and the tuna has been added and is simmering, reduce the heat to low. Add the packet of curry powder, stirring continuously with a whisk or spatula to ensure it dissolves without lumps. Then, gradually add the remaining 2 cups of water (approx. 400ml) while stirring to achieve your desired consistency. Simmer gently for about 3-5 minutes until the curry thickens.
Step 8
You can adjust the curry’s consistency to your liking. If you prefer it thinner, add a little more water. If you like a richer, thicker curry, simmer it a bit longer to reduce the liquid. Taste and adjust seasoning with salt or pepper if needed.
Step 9
Your delicious Tuna Curry Rice Bowl is ready! Fill a bowl with warm cooked rice, and generously ladle the flavorful tuna curry over it. For an extra touch, you can garnish with some seaweed flakes or sesame seeds. Enjoy your meal!
