Super Easy Side Dish: Stir-fried Sea Mustard Stems with Salted Sea Mustard Stems
Full of oceanic flavor! Introducing a super simple recipe for ‘Stir-fried Sea Mustard Stems,’ made with chewy and savory salted sea mustard stems. It’s a great side dish for rice and easy to enjoy even when you don’t have much of an appetite. We’ll guide you step-by-step, from removing the saltiness of salted sea mustard stems to achieving a delicious stir-fry!
Main Ingredients- 300g Salted Sea Mustard Stems (after desalting)
- 1/2 Onion
- A pinch of Carrot
- A pinch of Minced Garlic
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, we’ll remove the saltiness from the salted sea mustard stems. Place the salted sea mustard stems in a bowl and roughly rinse off the salt under running water. Then, soak them in cold water for about 30 minutes. Change the water about twice during this soaking period to effectively remove the saltiness. This soaking process is crucial for the final flavor of your stir-fried sea mustard stems.
Step 2
Once the sea mustard stems are sufficiently soaked, gently massage and wash them with your hands. Rinse them 2-3 times under running water to remove any slimy texture, and then squeeze out the excess water thoroughly. Cut the prepared sea mustard stems into bite-sized pieces (about 5-7cm in length). If they are too long, they can be difficult to stir-fry or eat.
Step 3
Now, let’s begin the stir-frying process. Heat a generous amount of cooking oil in a pan. Add the onion and sauté until it becomes translucent and releases its sweetness. Cook over medium-low heat slowly; thoroughly sautéing the onions will deepen the overall flavor of the dish.
Step 4
Once the onions are well sautéed, add the shredded carrot and stir-fry together. Quickly stir-fry for about 1-2 minutes until the carrot is slightly tender, adding a vibrant color to the dish. Avoid overcooking the carrots, as they can become mushy; it’s best to maintain their crisp texture.
Step 5
Add the prepared sea mustard stems to the pan and stir-fry until all ingredients are well combined. Maintain medium heat and cook for about 3-4 minutes. Once the sea mustard stems become tender, add the minced garlic and stir-fry for another minute until fragrant. Now it’s time to season. If the taste is lacking, add a tiny dash of soy sauce or fish sauce for extra umami. (I skipped adding extra seasoning as the desalting was effective.)
Step 6
Your delicious side dish, Stir-fried Sea Mustard Stems, is now ready! It’s wonderful served over warm rice or packed as a lunchbox side. Enjoy the chewy texture and refreshing taste of the sea!
