Main Ingredients & Seasoning- 300g frozen shrimp, thawed
- 50g onion, finely minced
- 30g carrot, finely minced
- Pinch of black pepper
- 150g breadcrumbs
- 1 slice white bread (crusts removed)
- Vegetable oil (for deep frying)
- 7 Vienna sausages
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, thaw the 300g of frozen shrimp by soaking them in cold water. Finely mince 30g of carrot and 50g of onion after washing and peeling them. It’s crucial to mince all ingredients finely for a smooth batter.
Step 2
Place the thawed shrimp (300g), finely minced carrot (30g), minced onion (50g), and the white bread with crusts removed (1 slice) into a food processor. Process until everything is finely ground into a smooth paste. Ensuring a uniform texture is key for a good batter.
Step 3
To the ground shrimp mixture, add 3 tablespoons of starch powder and a pinch of black pepper. Mix well using a spatula or your hands, kneading until combined. The starch powder will make the batter chewy and tender, while the pepper helps to eliminate any shrimp odor.
Step 4
Check the consistency of the shrimp batter. With the starch powder and breadcrumbs (to be used later), the final mixture will be moist yet smooth. Prepare the Vienna sausages to be skewered.
Step 5
Thread each of the 7 Vienna sausages onto skewers. Using skewers makes them easier to handle during frying and serving. You can also use skewers with fun shapes to appeal to children.
Step 6
Lightly and evenly coat the skewered Vienna sausages with 2 tablespoons of starch powder. Applying starch powder first helps the shrimp batter adhere better to the sausages.
Step 7
Carefully coat the starch-dusted Vienna sausages with the shrimp batter. At first, it might seem like the batter isn’t sticking well, but as the starch absorbs a little moisture, the batter will gradually adhere firmly. Don’t worry; just ensure the entire sausage is covered evenly.
Step 8
Generously coat the shrimp-battered hot dogs with breadcrumbs, ensuring an even layer. A thorough coating of breadcrumbs will result in a crispier texture after frying. Be careful not to get breadcrumbs on the skewer handles.
Step 9
Heat enough vegetable oil in a deep frying pot to about 170°C (340°F). Carefully place the breadcrumb-coated hot dogs into the hot oil and fry until golden brown on all sides. Frying over excessively high heat can burn the outside while leaving the inside undercooked, so maintain a medium heat for even cooking. Fry for about 3-4 minutes until golden and crispy.
Step 10
Once perfectly fried, remove the shrimp mini hot dogs from the oil and place them on paper towels to drain excess oil. Your delicious golden-brown shrimp hot dogs are ready!
Step 11
These shrimp hot dogs can be made in larger batches and stored in the freezer. When your children want a snack, take them out ahead of time to thaw, then fry them. This allows you to provide a healthy homemade snack instead of store-bought frozen foods. Serve them with mustard or ketchup for dipping, or enjoy them plain to savor the natural shrimp flavor. They make a wonderful snack either way.
