We’re going to make a truly delicious ‘rice-stealing’ tofu dish with sesame oil and soy sauce! It’s simple yet makes a fantastic side dish.

First, cut the tofu into bite-sized pieces (about 2-3 cm thick). Place the cut tofu on a kitchen towel and gently press down on both sides to remove as much moisture as possible. Removing excess water helps prevent oil splattering when frying and makes the tofu crispier.

Lightly oil a pan and pan-fry the tofu pieces until golden brown on both sides. Frying them until nicely browned enhances the texture. Once the tofu is fried, in the same pan, combine 2 Tbsp soy sauce, 1 Tbsp gochugaru, 1/2 Tbsp sugar, 1 Tbsp minced garlic, 2 finely chopped Cheongyang peppers, and 1/4 cup chopped green onion to create the seasoning sauce.

Add the fried tofu back to the pan with the seasoning sauce. Braise over medium-low heat, stirring gently to coat the tofu evenly with the sauce. Let it simmer for about 5-7 minutes, or until the sauce thickens and coats the tofu. Be mindful of the heat to prevent burning.

Once the sauce has reduced and clings nicely to the tofu, drizzle in 1 Tbsp of sesame oil for the finishing touch. The nutty aroma of sesame oil will deepen the flavor significantly.
