Ingredients- 3 slices of bread
- 2 sheets of gim (or gamtae)
- 1 low-sodium mentaiko (pollock roe)
- 2 eggs
- 2 Tbsp butter
- 1 Tbsp cooking sake (or mirin)
- 1 Tbsp brown sugar
- 2 Tbsp milk
- A pinch of grated Parmesan cheese
- A little ketchup
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Let’s start by preparing all the ingredients needed for our delicious toast. Fresh ingredients are key to a great taste!
Step 2
Gamtae is a type of seaweed that is lighter than gim, with a subtly bitter aftertaste and a unique, fragrant oceanic aroma. It’s known for its calming properties, aiding sleep, making it a ‘natural sleeping aid.’ It’s also beneficial for bone health, helping to prevent osteoporosis. Furthermore, gamtae supports blood circulation, prevents anemia, aids digestion, can be helpful for weight management, and improves blood stasis, truly earning its title as a ‘sea tonic’.
Step 3
Make a lengthwise cut down the center of the low-sodium mentaiko with a knife. Then, carefully use the knife to scrape the roe away from the membrane and skin.
Step 4
Place the gamtae sheets on a dry, lightly heated pan over low heat. Gently toast each side for just a moment – be careful not to burn it. Once lightly toasted, place the gamtae in a plastic bag, seal the opening tightly, and then crush it into fine powder using your hands or a rolling pin.
Step 5
Crack the two eggs into a bowl and whisk them well with 1 Tbsp of cooking sake. Add 2 Tbsp of milk and 0.5 Tbsp of brown sugar, and mix thoroughly. Finally, stir in the crushed gamtae powder prepared earlier until well combined, creating your gamtae egg batter.
Step 6
Dip each slice of bread into the gamtae egg batter, ensuring both sides are evenly coated. Allowing the bread to soak for a short while will result in a more moist and flavorful toast.
Step 7
Melt 2 Tbsp of butter in a lightly heated pan over low heat. Once the butter is melted and fragrant, carefully place the gamtae-battered bread slices into the pan. Grill each side until golden brown and perfectly toasted, ensuring it doesn’t burn.
Step 8
Voila! Your beautifully golden-brown Gamtae & Mentaiko Toast, coated in a delightful gamtae batter, is ready. The aroma of toasted butter mingled with the subtle scent of gamtae is truly enticing.
Step 9
Slice the finished toast into four equal pieces for easy serving. This makes it convenient to eat and perfect for sharing.
Step 10
For an extra touch of sweetness, lightly sprinkle some sugar over the toast. This completes your delicious Gamtae Toast!
Step 11
To elevate your toast even further, add a drizzle of ketchup or a sprinkle of grated Parmesan cheese according to your preference. Enjoy this exquisite and flavorful treat!
