Main Ingredients

  • 5 sheets of rectangular fish cakes
  • 1 stalk of green onion
  • 1 small onion

Seasoning

  • 4 Tbsp cooking wine (like Mirin)
  • 2 Tbsp cooking oil
  • 1 Tbsp minced garlic
  • 2 Tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 Tbsp corn syrup or honey
  • 1 Tbsp sesame oil
  • A pinch of sesame seeds

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, check the texture of your fish cakes. If they are quite firm from being frozen, you might want to briefly blanch them in hot water before proceeding. Cut the fish cakes into bite-sized pieces, about 1.5 cm by 5 cm. Heat 4 tablespoons of cooking wine in a pan over medium-low heat. Add the cut fish cakes and stir-fry them for a few minutes. This step helps to remove any unpleasant odors and tenderize the fish cakes.

Step 2

Remove the stir-fried fish cakes from the pan and set them aside. In the same pan, add 2 tablespoons of cooking oil and 1 tablespoon of minced garlic. Gently stir-fry the garlic over low heat until it becomes fragrant. Be careful not to burn the garlic, as this can impart a bitter taste. The goal is to infuse the oil with a mild garlic aroma.

Step 3

Once the garlic is fragrant, add the thinly sliced onion (1 small onion) and the diagonally cut green onion (1 stalk) to the pan. Stir-fry until the vegetables begin to soften and turn slightly translucent. Then, pour in 2 tablespoons of soy sauce and 2 tablespoons of corn syrup (or honey). Stir well to combine the seasonings. Return the stir-fried fish cakes to the pan and continue to cook for another 1-2 minutes, ensuring they are evenly coated with the sauce.

Step 4

Just before turning off the heat, drizzle in 1 tablespoon of sesame oil and sprinkle with a pinch of sesame seeds. Stir everything together one last time. Your delicious stir-fried fish cakes are now ready! They are wonderfully served warm over a bowl of steamed rice.
