Savory and Sweet Soy Sauce Braised Tofu: A Perfect Match for My Taste!

Savory Soy Sauce Braised Tofu Recipe

After attending a graduation ceremony, dining out, and taking a nap at home, a sense of obligation kicked in to cook. I opened the fridge, scanned its contents, and found some leftover tofu from last time. I decided to make braised tofu with soy sauce as a side dish. I didn’t have the energy to film a video, so I’m quickly posting about it with just photos.

Recipe Info

  • Category : Side dish
  • Ingredient Category : Others
  • Occasion : Everyday
  • Cooking : Braise
  • Servings : 2 servings
  • Cooking Time : Within 15 minutes
  • Difficulty : Beginner

Main Ingredients

  • 1 block Firm Tofu (approx. 300g)
  • 1/4 Onion
  • 1 stalk Green Onion

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, cut the tofu into approximately 1.5cm thick slices. Cutting them too thin can make them crumble easily, so maintain a decent thickness. Gently press the sliced tofu with paper towels to remove excess water. This step helps prevent oil splattering when frying and results in crispier tofu.

Step 1

Step 2

Lightly sprinkle salt and pepper on both sides of the drained tofu for seasoning. This enhances the tofu’s natural flavor and helps it absorb the sauce better. It’s a simple step that adds a lot of depth.

Step 2

Step 3

Heat a pan over medium heat and add a mixture of canola oil and perilla oil in a 1:1 ratio. Using perilla oil for frying the tofu, instead of adding it directly to the sauce, imparts a wonderful nutty aroma. Ensure the oil is sufficiently heated.

Step 3

Step 4

Place the seasoned tofu slices in the hot pan and fry them until golden brown on both sides. Fried tofu becomes slightly crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, making it delicious even with just a dip in soy sauce. Fry all the tofu and set it aside on a plate.

Step 4

Step 5

Now, let’s make the flavorful soy sauce mixture. In a small bowl, combine 4 Tbsp soy sauce, 3 Tbsp water, 1 Tbsp sugar, and 0.5 Tbsp minced garlic. Stir well until the sugar is completely dissolved. Thinly slice the onion and diagonally slice the green onion. These vegetables will add aroma as the tofu simmers.

Step 5

Step 6

Arrange the golden-brown fried tofu slices evenly on the bottom of a wide pan. Neatly place the sliced onion and green onion on top of the tofu. As they cook, these vegetables will infuse their fragrance into the tofu, making it even more delicious.

Step 6

Step 7

Pour the prepared soy sauce mixture evenly over the tofu and vegetables. Ensure the sauce covers all the ingredients so it can be absorbed properly.

Step 7

Step 8

Reduce the heat to medium-low. Tilt the pan slightly and spoon the sauce over the tofu and vegetables repeatedly. This basting process allows the sauce to permeate the tofu thoroughly and creates a glossy finish. Finally, sprinkle with sesame seeds for an extra nutty flavor and appealing look. Enjoy this delicious braised tofu with a bowl of warm rice!
