Main Ingredients- 3 bunches fresh perilla leaves (approx. 30-40 leaves)
- 1 medium onion
Seasoning Ingredients- 1.5 Tbsp soy sauce (adjust to taste)
- 1 tsp ginger syrup or minced ginger
- 1 Tbsp plum extract or syrup
- 1 tsp sesame oil
- 1 Tbsp perilla oil
- 1.5 Tbsp soy sauce (adjust to taste)
- 1 tsp ginger syrup or minced ginger
- 1 Tbsp plum extract or syrup
- 1 tsp sesame oil
- 1 Tbsp perilla oil
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, heat a pan over medium-low heat and add 1 Tbsp of perilla oil. Thinly slice the onion and sauté until it becomes translucent and slightly golden brown. Sautéing the onion well brings out its natural sweetness, enhancing the overall flavor of the braise.
Step 2
Once the onions are tender, add 1.5 Tbsp soy sauce, 1 tsp ginger syrup, and 1 Tbsp plum extract to the pan. Stir to combine the seasonings and bring to a gentle boil over medium heat for about 30 seconds to 1 minute, allowing the flavors to meld.
Step 3
Temporarily turn off the heat. Wash the perilla leaves thoroughly and pat them completely dry. Cut the leaves into 2 equal pieces. Add the cut perilla leaves to the pan and gently toss them to coat evenly with the seasoning. Let them sit for a moment to absorb the flavors.
Step 4
Turn the heat back on to high. Braise the leaves for about 1-2 minutes over high heat until they wilt and the seasoning coats them well. Be careful not to overcook, as the leaves can become mushy.
Step 5
Finally, turn off the heat and drizzle in 1 tsp of sesame oil for a glossy finish and nutty aroma. Transfer the delicious braised sesame leaves to a serving plate. Your fragrant summer side dish is now ready!
