This is a quick and tasty sausage kimchi fried rice made with the two remaining frank sausages I had for budae jjigae! On hot days when appetite is low, this makes for a satisfying and flavorful meal. I made it with care and packed it as a lunch for my parents, and they absolutely loved it. Main Ingredients

  • 200g Cooked Rice (about 1 bowl)
  • 160-170g Well-Fermented Kimchi
  • 2 Frank Sausages (approx. 100-120g)

Seasoning & Others

  • 2 Tbsp Cooking Oil
  • 1 Tbsp Sesame Oil
  • 0.5 Tbsp Gochugaru (Korean chili flakes, adjust to taste)
  • 0.5 Tbsp Oyster Sauce
  • Pinch of Black Pepper (optional)

Cooking Instructions

Dice the frank sausages into bite-sized pieces (about 1cm thick). Heat 1 tablespoon of cooking oil in a pan over medium-low heat. Add the sausages and stir-fry until they turn a nice golden brown. Once browned and slightly crispy, set the cooked sausages aside in a separate bowl.

Finely chop the kimchi to a similar size as the sausages (about 1cm). Add the chopped kimchi to the same pan (you can use the residual oil from cooking the sausages, or add another tablespoon of cooking oil if needed). Stir-fry the kimchi over medium-low heat until it becomes slightly translucent and tender. This process mellows the tartness of the kimchi and enhances its savory flavor.

It’s best to use cold or room-temperature rice for fried rice. Avoid microwaving the rice, as this can make the fried rice mushy. Add the cold rice directly to the pan with the kimchi. Break up any clumps of rice with your spatula and stir-fry, mixing the ingredients well until the rice is separated and combined with the kimchi.

Once the rice and kimchi are partially combined, return the cooked sausages to the pan. Add 0.5 tablespoon of oyster sauce and 0.5 tablespoon of gochugaru. Turn the heat to high and stir-fry vigorously for about 1 minute, breaking up the rice with your spatula. High heat for a short time will give the rice a glossy finish and ensure the seasonings are evenly distributed, making it even more delicious.

After stir-frying, turn off the heat. Drizzle in 1 tablespoon of sesame oil and a pinch of black pepper, if desired.
