Delicious Soy-Braised Tofu: A Crowd-Pleasing, Soft, Rice-Stealing Recipe for the Whole Family
Tofu is both healthy and incredibly tasty. Braised tofu is a staple of home cooking! This soy-braised version is a hit with kids too, perfect for serving with rice.
Main Ingredients- 1 block Tofu (approx. 300g)
- 1/4 Onion
- A little Mushroom (e.g., Shiitake, King Oyster)
- 1/4 Zucchini
Seasoning Ingredients- 4 Tbsp Soy Sauce
- 1 Tbsp Oyster Sauce
- 1 Tbsp Minced Garlic
- 2 Tbsp Sugar
- 2 Tbsp Corn Syrup (or Oligosaccharide)
- 1 Tbsp Sesame Oil
- 4 Tbsp Soy Sauce

Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Slice the block of tofu into bite-sized pieces (about 1.5-2cm thick). Gently press the sliced tofu with paper towels to remove excess moisture. This helps prevent oil splatter when frying and results in a crispier texture.
Step 2
Heat a frying pan with a generous amount of cooking oil over medium-low heat. Place the dried tofu slices in a single layer. Pan-fry until golden brown on both sides. Pre-frying the tofu ensures it holds its shape well during the braising process.
Step 3
While the tofu is frying, thinly slice the 1/4 onion and 1/4 zucchini. Trim and slice the mushrooms. Once the tofu is somewhat browned, push it to one side of the pan. Add the sliced vegetables and 1 Tbsp minced garlic to the empty space and sauté until fragrant. Cook the vegetables just until they begin to soften.
Step 4
Mix the sautéed vegetables and tofu together in the pan. Add all the seasoning ingredients: 4 Tbsp soy sauce, 1 Tbsp oyster sauce, 2 Tbsp sugar, 2 Tbsp corn syrup, and 1 Tbsp sesame oil. Stir gently to coat everything evenly. Bring to a simmer over medium heat and cook for about 5-7 minutes, or until the sauce has thickened and coats the tofu and vegetables beautifully. The liquid will reduce, infusing the ingredients with flavor.
Step 5
Your delicious soy-braised tofu is ready! Serve it attractively on a plate. It’s a perfect topping for hot steamed rice. For an extra touch, you can garnish with toasted sesame seeds or finely chopped green onions.
