Savory Bacon Gravy Sauce: A Delicious Brunch Classic
Rich & Flavorful Bacon Gravy Sauce
A cornerstone of American brunch, biscuits and gravy! My husband absolutely adores this dish, so I make it often. It’s easy to prepare with readily available ingredients, making it a highly recommended choice for your weekend brunch. Get ready to impress with this simple yet delicious sauce!
Ingredients- 2 strips of bacon (patted dry with paper towels)
- 1 Tbsp butter
- 2 Tbsp all-purpose flour
- 1 beef bouillon cube (or equivalent powder)
- 1 cup milk (240ml)
- Salt to taste
- Black pepper to taste
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Begin by cooking the 2 strips of bacon. Place the bacon in a skillet over medium heat without adding any oil, as the bacon will render its own fat. Cook until both sides are crispy and golden brown. Once cooked, remove the bacon from the pan and place it on paper towels to drain any excess grease. This step ensures a delightfully crisp texture.
Step 2
Finely chop the crispy bacon and set it aside for later. In the same skillet (with the bacon drippings), add 1 tablespoon of butter and 2 tablespoons of flour. Cook over medium-low heat, stirring constantly with a whisk or spatula, until a fragrant, nutty aroma develops and the mixture turns a light golden brown, about 1-2 minutes. This mixture, known as a roux, will thicken your gravy.
Step 3
Now, let’s create the sauce base. Dissolve 1 beef bouillon cube in 1 cup (240ml) of water to make beef stock. Gradually whisk the beef stock into the roux, ensuring there are no lumps. Once smooth, pour in 1 cup (240ml) of milk and stir well to combine. Add the chopped crispy bacon back into the sauce and bring it to a gentle simmer.
Step 4
Continue to simmer over medium heat, stirring frequently to prevent sticking. Allow the sauce to thicken to your desired consistency. If it’s too thin, let it simmer longer; if it becomes too thick, you can thin it out with a little more milk. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Be mindful of the bacon’s saltiness when adding salt. Finish with a grind of fresh black pepper for enhanced flavor. This rich bacon gravy is wonderful served over biscuits, pancakes, or toast!
