Main Ingredients
- 1 can (135g) tuna, drained
- 1/2 block (approx. 150g) firm tofu for pan-frying
- 1 egg
- 2 Tbsp pancake mix (buchim garu)
- 1.5 Tbsp finely chopped green onion
- 1.5 Tbsp finely chopped carrot
- 1 Tbsp finely chopped onion
- Pinch of black pepper
- Pinch of sesame seeds
- 1 Tbsp sesame oil
- Grape seed oil (or cooking oil) for pan-frying
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, it’s crucial to remove excess moisture from the tofu. Wrap the firm tofu in a cheesecloth or clean kitchen towel, then press firmly with your hands to squeeze out as much water as possible. This step prevents the mixture from becoming too wet.
Step 2
Open the tuna can completely. Tilt the can and use the back of a spoon to press down and rotate, thoroughly draining the oil from the tuna. Removing as much oil as possible will result in a cleaner, less greasy taste.
Step 3
Finely chop the carrot, green onion, and onion. Mincing them very finely is ideal, especially if children will be eating them, as it ensures the vegetables blend well with the mixture and create a softer texture when cooked.
Step 4
In a large bowl, combine the drained tofu and the thoroughly drained tuna. Add all the finely chopped green onion, carrot, and onion to the bowl.
Step 5
Next, crack in 1 fresh egg. Add a pinch of black pepper to your preference. For added nuttiness, include a pinch of sesame seeds and 1 tablespoon of sesame oil. Finally, add 2 tablespoons of pancake mix to achieve the right consistency for the mixture.
Step 6
Using a spoon, gently mix all the ingredients. Once they are somewhat combined, knead the mixture with your hands until it becomes smooth and cohesive. Thoroughly kneading is key to ensuring all ingredients bind together well.
Step 7
Once the mixture is ready, it’s time to shape the patties. Take a portion of the mixture into your palm and form it into round, flat patties. It’s best to make them a manageable size, suitable for a single bite.
Step 8
Now, let’s pan-fry the patties to perfection. Heat a frying pan over medium-low heat and add a generous amount of grape seed oil. Place the shaped tuna tofu patties in the hot pan and gently press them down with a spoon to flatten them slightly as they cook.
Step 9
It’s important to check if one side is golden brown. Gently lift one patty with a spoon; when it shows a nice golden-brown color, it’s time to flip. Flip all the remaining patties in the same manner.
Step 10
Similarly, gently press the other side with a spoon to shape it and cook until golden brown. Cooking both sides evenly ensures the patties are cooked through and delicious.
Step 11
Transfer the cooked patties to a wire rack or a plate lined with paper towels. This step helps to drain off excess oil, making the patties even more savory.
Step 12
Your delicious tuna tofu patties are ready! They are wonderful served warm, but also taste great at room temperature. Enjoy them with soy sauce or ketchup according to your preference!
