For Parents’ Day, I prepared Fugu Jjigae, a dish my parents always enjoy. I used a convenient meal kit for Milbok (grass puffer) Jjigae. Preparing pufferfish myself isn’t feasible, so I opted for a fresh meal kit. I purchased two packs and easily brewed a delicious stew. The soup is not overly spicy, boasting a clear, refreshing, and delicate flavor, making it perfect for parents who prefer milder tastes. It’s also known for its health benefits. Since they love Fugu Jjigae so much, I decided to prepare it this way. The recipe included in the kit was followed exactly.
Meal Kit Components- Prepared Milbok (Grass Puffer) (Meal Kit 1300g)
- Minari (Water Parsley)
- Bean Sprouts
- Seasoning & Seafood Broth Concentrate
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, let’s check the meal kit components. Typically, it includes well-prepared Milbok (grass puffer), fresh minari (water parsley), bean sprouts, and a seasoning and seafood broth concentrate that defines the stew’s flavor. The included recipe suggests boiling water, then adding the Milbok and seasoning once it boils, and finally adding the minari and bean sprouts to complete the dish. It’s incredibly simple!
Step 2
Begin by pouring 1.5L of water or natural seafood broth into a pot and bringing it to a boil. Using the included seafood broth concentrate will add a deeper flavor. Once the water starts boiling, add the prepared Milbok from the kit and let it cook together. The pufferfish in the meal kit is already cleaned and prepared, with minimal bones and intact tails, making it very convenient to cook. As the pufferfish cooks, the broth will turn milky white.
Step 3
When the broth is boiling vigorously, stir in the seasoning sauce provided in the meal kit. Then, add the fresh minari and crisp bean sprouts, and simmer for a little longer. The pufferfish is already cooked, so you only need to cook until the vegetables are just wilted. Serving the stew immediately allows you to enjoy the fresh texture of the minari and bean sprouts first. For an extra touch of flavor, you can dip them in a sauce made by mixing soy sauce, wasabi, and rice wine.
Step 4
Once the bean sprouts are fully cooked, turn off the heat. While it’s best enjoyed immediately after cooking, you can also let it simmer fully and then serve portions. The aromatic minari, the refreshing and rich Fugu Jjigae broth, and the crunchy bean sprouts create a wonderful harmony. Indeed, the deep flavor of Fugu Jjigae comes from the fresh pufferfish. This completes a healthy and delicious Fugu Jjigae, perfect for the whole family to enjoy!
