Meatball Mixture Ingredients

  • 600g ground pork (preferably with a moderate fat content for tenderness)
  • 2 Tbsp potato starch or cornstarch
  • 1/2 medium onion (minced very finely)
  • 20cm white part of a green onion (scallion) (minced very finely)
  • 1 Tbsp minced garlic
  • 1/2 Tbsp minced ginger (reduce if you prefer a less intense ginger flavor)
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp salt
  • Vegetable oil (for frying the meatballs)
  • Grated Parmesan cheese (for garnish, optional)

Sweet & Savory Meatball Sauce

  • 10 Tbsp store-bought tomato sauce
  • 3 Tbsp ketchup
  • 1 Tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 Tbsp tonkatsu sauce (or steak sauce as an alternative)
  • 1 Tbsp sugar (adjust to your sweetness preference)
  • 5 Tbsp water

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, finely mince the white part of the green onion. Mincing it very finely will contribute to a smoother texture in your meatballs.

Step 1

Step 2

Similarly, mince the onion very finely. The moisture from the onion will help keep the meatballs extra juicy.

Step 2

Step 3

In a large bowl, place the 600g of ground pork. Add 1 Tbsp of minced garlic and 1/2 Tbsp of minced ginger to eliminate any porky odor.

Step 3

Step 4

Add 1 tsp of salt and 1/2 tsp of black pepper for seasoning. Freshly ground pepper will add a wonderful aroma.

Step 4

Step 5

Add the finely minced green onion and onion to the bowl. Knead the mixture with your hands for about 5 minutes until it becomes sticky and well-combined. This stickiness is crucial for the meatballs to hold their shape without falling apart.

Step 5

Step 6

Once the mixture is cohesive, add 2 Tbsp of starch (potato or cornstarch). The starch will help make the inside of the meatballs tender and moist.

Step 6

Step 7

Now, shape the mixture into small, round meatballs, about 3-4 cm in diameter. You can roll them between your palms or use a spoon for convenience.

Step 7

Step 8

Heat a generous amount of vegetable oil in a frying pan over medium-low heat. Brown the meatballs on all sides until they are golden brown. Browning the exterior helps create a slightly crispy texture while keeping the inside tender.

Step 8

Step 9

While the meatballs are browning, prepare the sauce. In a separate bowl, combine 10 Tbsp of tomato sauce, 3 Tbsp of ketchup, 1 Tbsp of soy sauce, 2 Tbsp of tonkatsu sauce, 1 Tbsp of sugar, and 5 Tbsp of water. Whisk everything together until well blended.

Step 9

Step 10

Pour the prepared sauce over the browned meatballs in the pan. Simmer over medium-low heat until the sauce slightly thickens. To ensure the meatballs are cooked through, cover the pan with a lid and let them simmer for an additional 5-7 minutes. This steaming process will make sure the inside is cooked thoroughly and remains moist.

Step 10

Step 11

Finally, sprinkle with grated Parmesan cheese for an extra touch of flavor, if desired. Serve warm and enjoy your delicious homemade pork meatballs!
