Savory and Sweet! How to Make Kimjaban Bokkeum, a Beloved Korean Side Dish
This recipe guarantees a delicious bowl of rice! We’re sharing the secret to making irresistible Kimjaban Bokkeum, a fantastic side dish that’s perfect for when you have a loss of appetite. Enjoy a satisfying meal with the crispy texture and umami-rich seasoning of this delightful seaweed stir-fry.
Key Ingredients- 20g seasoned dried seaweed flakes (adjust to your preference)
- 2 Tbsp sesame oil
- 0.5 Tbsp cooking oil
- 1 tsp salt (or seasoned salt)
- 1 Tbsp sugar
- 1 Tbsp toasted sesame seeds (or ground sesame seeds)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare about 20g of seasoned dried seaweed flakes (kimjaban). If the flakes are a bit large, gently break them into smaller, bite-sized pieces with your hands. (Be careful, as dried seaweed is fragile!)
Step 2
To the crumbled seaweed flakes, add 2 Tbsp of sesame oil and 0.5 Tbsp of cooking oil. Gently mix them together with your hands, ensuring the flakes are evenly coated and separated. This oil coating prevents burning and helps achieve a crispier texture.
Step 3
Heat a frying pan over low heat. Add the oiled seaweed flakes and stir-fry slowly. If your seaweed flakes feel a bit damp, it’s crucial to continue stir-frying until all moisture has evaporated and they become wonderfully crispy. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking or burning. The lower the heat and longer you stir-fry, the crispier they will get.
Step 4
Once the seaweed flakes are thoroughly fried and crispy, turn off the heat. While the pan is still warm, add 1 tsp of salt, 1 Tbsp of sugar, and 1 Tbsp of toasted sesame seeds. Stir quickly to coat the flakes evenly with the seasoning, utilizing the residual heat. This ensures a perfect glaze.
Step 5
Your perfectly crispy and delicious Kimjaban Bokkeum, a true rice thief, is now ready! Serve it generously over warm rice for a delightful meal. It can be stored in the refrigerator for several days.
