- 4 Mini square fish cakes
- 1/3 Onion (approx. 50g)
- 1 Green onion (approx. 10cm length)
- 1.5 Tbsp Cooking oil
Seasoning- 1.5 Tbsp Gochujang (Korean chili paste)
- 500ml Water
- 0.5 Tbsp Soy sauce
- 1.5 Tbsp Brown sugar
- 2 Tbsp Corn syrup or Oligosaccharide
- 0.5 Tbsp Oyster sauce
- 1.5 Tbsp Gochujang (Korean chili paste)
- 500ml Water
- 0.5 Tbsp Soy sauce
- 1.5 Tbsp Brown sugar
- 2 Tbsp Corn syrup or Oligosaccharide
- 0.5 Tbsp Oyster sauce
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Before you begin cooking, prepare all your ingredients. Rinse the tteokbokki rice cakes in cold water. Cut the square fish cakes into bite-sized pieces (about 2-3 pieces each). Slice the onion thinly and diagonally cut the green onion. Having all ingredients prepped makes the cooking process much smoother.
Step 2
Heat 1.5 tablespoons of cooking oil in a wide pan or pot. Add 1.5 tablespoons of gochujang. Stir-fry the gochujang over low heat for about 20 seconds. This step helps to mellow out any raw chili paste flavor and deepens the taste. Be careful not to burn it.
Step 3
Pour 500ml of water into the pan with the stir-fried gochujang. This amount of water should be enough to cover the rice cakes and fish cakes. You can adjust the thickness of the sauce later as it simmers and reduces.
Step 4
Now it’s time to add the key flavoring ingredients that will make your tteokbokki delicious. Add 0.5 tablespoon of soy sauce, 1.5 tablespoons of brown sugar, 2 tablespoons of corn syrup (or oligosaccharide), and 0.5 tablespoon of oyster sauce for that extra umami. Stir well to combine everything.
Step 5
Wait until the seasoned broth comes to a rolling boil. Boiling over high heat helps to dissolve the seasonings quickly and shortens the overall cooking time. A rolling boil signifies the delicious start of your tteokbokki!
Step 6
Once the broth is boiling, add the prepared fish cakes, tteokbokki rice cakes, and sliced onion in order. It’s a good idea to gently separate the rice cakes if they are stuck together. Stir everything to ensure the ingredients are submerged in the sauce.
Step 7
As the rice cakes and fish cakes cook, stir occasionally to prevent sticking and to allow the sauce to thicken and coat the ingredients evenly. Continue to simmer until the rice cakes are soft and the sauce has reached your desired consistency. This should take about 5-7 minutes.
Step 8
When the rice cakes are tender and the sauce has thickened nicely, add the sliced green onion. Stir it in briefly just to combine. The fresh aroma of the green onion will enhance the overall flavor of the tteokbokki. Turn off the heat, serve, and enjoy your kid-approved oyster sauce tteokbokki!
