- 1 block Firm Tofu (300-350g)
- 3 Tbsp Potato Starch or Corn Starch
- 2 Tbsp Sweet Rice Flour
- Plenty of Brown Rice Oil or Cooking Oil
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Press the tofu firmly with paper towels to remove excess water. Slice it into thicker pieces than for regular pan-fried tofu, about 1.5-2 cm thick. In a wide dish, mix the starch and sweet rice flour. Coat each piece of tofu evenly with the starch mixture. Using sweet rice flour will give it a chewier texture.
Step 2
Heat a generous amount of brown rice oil or cooking oil in a pan over medium heat. Place the coated tofu pieces in the hot pan and fry until golden brown and crispy on both sides. Ensure it’s cooked thoroughly to achieve a nice crisp.
Step 3
Transfer the cooked tofu steaks to a wire rack or paper towels to drain excess oil. In the same pan (drain some oil if there’s too much), sauté the thinly sliced onion until translucent. Then, add the thinly sliced fresh shiitake mushrooms and sauté together to release their aroma. You can also add other vegetables like carrots or bell peppers.
Step 4
In a small saucepan, combine the store-bought steak sauce (or tonkatsu sauce) (4 Tbsp), mayonnaise (2 Tbsp), and onion enzyme or plum extract (1 Tbsp). Stir over medium-low heat until well combined. Avoid high heat. Adjust the amount of sauce based on its saltiness.
Step 5
Add the sautéed onions and mushrooms to the sauce. Simmer for another minute or two until the ingredients are well incorporated into the sauce. If the sauce becomes too thick, add a tiny bit of water to reach your desired consistency.
Step 6
Arrange the golden-brown tofu steaks on a plate and generously ladle the warm steak sauce over them. This dish is perfect as a hearty meal with rice, or served with a salad for a lighter option, and it’s also great for a diet meal. Garnish with chopped nuts or parsley flakes for an extra touch.
