Main Ingredients

  • 1 block (approx. 300g) firm tofu
  • Approx. 20g carrot (about the size of your index finger)

Seasoning & Add-ins

  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp starch (potato or corn)
  • Pinch of black pepper
  • 1 tsp curry powder (optional, for diet version)
  • 1/2 Korean chili pepper or red chili pepper (finely minced, optional)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

The key is to remove as much moisture from the tofu as possible. Wrap the block of tofu in a dry cheesecloth or clean kitchen towel. Press down firmly with your palms, almost like mashing, to squeeze out the water. Pressing harder will be more effective. If too much water remains, the tofu steak mixture may not hold its shape well, so be thorough in squeezing.

Step 1

Step 2

Have your well-drained tofu ready.

Step 2

Step 3

You’ll need about 20g of carrot, roughly the length of your index finger. Finely mince the carrot using a grater or a knife. The minced carrot might also release some water, so press it lightly with a kitchen towel to remove excess moisture before adding it to the tofu.

Step 3

Step 4

To the drained tofu, add 1/2 tsp salt and a pinch of black pepper. For a chewier texture, mix in 1 tbsp of starch. If you’re aiming for a healthy, low-calorie diet meal without a separate sauce, add 1 tsp of curry powder for an aromatic boost. For a hint of spice, you can also include finely minced chili pepper, if desired. Mix all ingredients thoroughly until a well-combined dough forms.

Step 4

Step 5

Divide the mixture into 3 equal portions (about 100-110g each) to form the steak patties. Place a portion on your palm and gently press it down into a flat, round patty shape. Slightly flatten the edges to help the steaks maintain their shape while cooking.

Step 5

Step 6

Heat 1 tbsp of cooking oil in a non-stick skillet over medium heat. Once the pan is warm, carefully place the tofu patties into the skillet. Reduce the heat to low. It’s important to cook slowly to ensure the steaks cook through without burning. Don’t try to flip the tofu steaks until the bottom side is firm and golden brown, as they can easily break apart if flipped too early. Cook each side for about 5-10 minutes until beautifully golden.

Step 6

Step 7

Once one side is nicely browned, carefully flip the steak and cook the other side for a similar amount of time, until golden brown and cooked through. Your delicious tofu steaks are ready when both sides have a lovely golden color. Serve them warm as is, or with your favorite dipping sauce.
