How to Make Deep, Savory Onion Broth & Tea Using Onion Peels
We’ll show you how to transform simple onion peels into a nutritious broth and tea. Simple to make, packed with goodness!
Ingredients- 300g thoroughly washed and dried onion peels
- 10 broth bags (or small muslin bags)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Do you usually throw away onion peels after using the onions for cooking? Did you know that these peels are packed with beneficial nutrients? Today, we’ll show you how to repurpose these onion peels into a nourishing broth and a fragrant tea, ensuring nothing goes to waste. It’s easy to make and wonderfully healthy!
Step 2
First and foremost, thoroughly washing the onion peels is crucial since we’ll be consuming them or using them for broth. Place the peeled onion skins in clean water and add 2-3 tablespoons of vinegar. Let them soak for about 5 to 10 minutes. This vinegar soak helps to remove any dirt or impurities clinging to the peels. Gently agitate or flip them once or twice during soaking to ensure even contact with the vinegar solution.
Step 3
After soaking, you’ll notice that the water becomes slightly cloudy as impurities are released from the peels. Drain the peels and rinse them thoroughly under running water 2-3 times. Once clean, shake off excess water and then dry the peels completely in a well-ventilated, shaded area. Air-drying in a place with good airflow, rather than direct sunlight, helps preserve the natural flavor and aroma of the onion peels.
Step 4
Once dried, the onion peels will become crisp and brittle. They should be dry enough that they make a slight crackling sound when handled, similar to potato chips. These crispy dried peels are easy to store and perfect for steeping into tea or making broth later. You’ll know they’re perfectly dried when they easily crumble in your hands.
Step 5
We’re almost done! To prepare the dried onion peels, get a small broth bag, readily available at most supermarkets or home goods stores. These bags make it incredibly convenient to steep the onion peels without any fuss.
Step 6
Fill the broth bag with the dried onion peels. Nowadays, there are many convenient bags specifically designed for making broths or teas, which are very handy. These onion peels can be used simply as tea or to create a flavorful base for various dishes. You can fully enjoy the deep flavor of the onion skins.
Step 7
Once filled, simply close the top of the broth bag. It will look just like a store-bought broth pack! Store these prepared bags in an airtight container in the refrigerator. When ready to enjoy, take out one bag and steep it in hot water for about 5 minutes to make a warm, comforting onion tea. Savor the clear, deep flavor and enjoy a healthy day!
