Main Ingredients- 1 medium onion
- 2 slices pumpkin (approx. 150g)
- 2 medium potatoes
- 250g yam (Japanese yam or Chinese yam)
- A pinch of salt
- 1 Tbsp sesame oil
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Wash the pumpkin thoroughly. Remove the seeds and stem. Cut into bite-sized pieces (about 2-3cm). You can peel the skin or leave it on, depending on your preference.
Step 2
Peel the potatoes and cut them into large chunks. Cutting them into manageable pieces will prevent them from falling apart during steaming.
Step 3
Place the prepared pumpkin and potatoes in a steamer. Steam over high heat for about 15-20 minutes, or until completely tender. They should be easily pierced with a fork. (Tip: I used 2 slices of pre-cooked pumpkin and 2 medium potatoes for this recipe.)
Step 4
Peel the onion and rinse it under cold water. Carefully peel the yam as well.
Step 5
Using a grater, finely grate the peeled yam. Grate it until you achieve a smooth, slightly viscous texture.
Step 6
Transfer the steamed pumpkin and potatoes to a bowl. Mash them thoroughly with a fork or masher until smooth. Add the grated yam and mix well until combined, creating a cohesive filling.
Step 7
Season the mashed mixture with a small pinch of salt to taste and stir in 1 tablespoon of sesame oil for added flavor. Remember, it’s a low-sodium recipe, so use salt sparingly.
Step 8
Cut the medium onion into 2-3 large wedges, keeping the root end intact. This helps hold the filling and maintain the onion’s shape while steaming.
Step 9
Generously stuff the pumpkin, potato, and yam mixture into the cuts of each onion wedge. Filling them well will make for a satisfying bite.
Step 10
Carefully place the stuffed onion wedges into a preheated steamer. Cover and steam for about 3-5 minutes. Steam just until the onion becomes translucent and slightly tender. Overcooking can make the onion lose its pleasant crunch.
Step 11
Arrange the warm steamed onions on a plate. Your healthy and delicious low-sodium steamed onion dish is now complete! Enjoy it immediately while it’s warm.
