Ingredients

  • Donut mix 240g
  • Milk 75ml
  • Vegetable oil 24ml
  • Powdered sugar (or granulated white sugar) for coating
  • Frying oil (generous amount)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, prepare all your ingredients for making the sweet rice doughnuts. A well-prepared station makes for a smoother cooking process.

Step 1

Step 2

In a large bowl, crack 1 egg. Add 75ml of milk and 24ml of vegetable oil. Whisk everything together with a fork or whisk until well combined, creating an egg mixture. This wet ingredient will add moisture and richness to your dough.

Step 2

Step 3

Add the 240g of donut mix to the bowl with the egg mixture. Stir with a spatula until just combined; a few streaks of dry mix are okay. Then, knead the dough with your hands for about 2-3 minutes until it forms a cohesive ball. Be careful not to over-knead, as this can make the doughnuts tough. Once the dough is formed, use a rolling pin to evenly flatten it to about 1cm (approximately 0.4 inches) thickness.

Step 3

Step 4

Take portions of the flattened dough and shape them into twists (kkwabaegi) by rolling and twisting, or form them into classic doughnut shapes. Feel free to get creative with the shapes; even ‘ugly’ ones have a charming appeal!

Step 4

Step 5

Pour a generous amount of frying oil into a deep pan or pot and heat it to 170°C (338°F). To test the oil temperature, drop a small piece of dough; it should sizzle and float to the surface. Once the oil is ready, reduce the heat to low and carefully place the shaped doughnut pieces into the hot oil, frying them one by one.

Step 5

Step 6

While frying, use chopsticks or tongs to turn the doughnuts frequently, ensuring they cook evenly on all sides. Fry for about 3-5 minutes, or until the doughnuts turn a beautiful golden brown color all over. Keep an eye on the heat to prevent them from burning.

Step 6

Step 7

Once golden brown, remove the fried doughnuts from the oil and place them on a wire rack or paper towels to drain any excess oil. While they are still warm, place them into a plastic bag filled with powdered sugar (or granulated sugar). Seal the bag and shake it vigorously until the doughnuts are evenly coated. Your nostalgic, crispy, and chewy sweet rice doughnuts are now ready to be enjoyed!
