Nostalgic Spam, Tofu, and Kimchi
Perfect as a Refreshing Drink Companion: Spam, Tofu, and Kimchi!
We made the nostalgic Spam, Tofu, and Kimchi using just Spam, tofu, and kimchi we had at home, and enjoyed it as a drink accompaniment. It’s great to make and eat simply with basic ingredients. ^^
Ingredients- 1 can (200g) Spam
- 1 block Tofu
- 1 handful Kimchi
- A pinch of Sugar
- A sprinkle of Sesame Seeds
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
For the Spam, we used one small can, about 200g. Slice it into bite-sized pieces. You can cut them into cubes or rectangles, whichever you prefer, as long as they are easy to eat.
Step 2
While the salty Spam is great as a side dish for rice, its saltiness can be quite strong when served as a drink accompaniment. To temper this, soak the sliced Spam in water for about 10 minutes before cooking. This helps to reduce the saltiness, making it more palatable as an appetizer.
Step 3
Instead of pan-frying the tofu, we’ll lightly blanch it in boiling water. This method helps to firm up the tofu and remove excess water, resulting in a pleasant texture that complements the other ingredients.
Step 4
To ensure uniform size with the Spam, cut the block of tofu in half lengthwise, then slice it into pieces that match the size of your Spam. This consistent size makes for a more visually appealing presentation and a better eating experience.
Step 5
Sauté the kimchi in a pan with cooking oil and sesame oil. If your kimchi is quite sour, add a little sugar to balance the flavor as it cooks. Stir-fry until the kimchi softens and the flavors meld together beautifully.
Step 6
Add about a cup of water to the pan with the kimchi. Cover and let it simmer on medium-low heat until the kimchi is tender and the liquid has reduced, creating a rich, flavorful kimchi stir-fry.
Step 7
Finish the kimchi stir-fry by sprinkling a generous amount of sesame seeds over the top. This adds a lovely nutty aroma and a touch of visual appeal.
Step 8
Arrange the prepared Spam and blanched tofu on a serving plate, alternating them. Spoon the savory kimchi stir-fry generously into the center. This combination of Spam, tofu, and kimchi creates a wonderful ‘samhap’ (three-in-one) that is incredibly satisfying and a truly nostalgic dish perfect for any gathering.
