How to Make Cabbage Street Toast: A Thick, Old-Style Toast Recipe with Bread
Relive your college days with this nostalgic street toast, a popular snack often enjoyed right outside campus! This cabbage toast, reminiscent of treats from senior club members, evokes fond memories. Oh, for the good old days! If you’re craving that classic taste, here’s how to make it.
Street Toast Ingredients- 1/4 head cabbage
- 1/4 carrot
- 2 crab sticks
- 2 eggs
- 1 sausage
- Pinch of black pepper
- Pinch of salt
- 1 knob of butter
- 2 slices of bread
- 2 slices of cheese
- Ketchup
- Muscovado sugar
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Prepare all the ingredients for the toast as shown in the picture.
Step 2
Roughly chop the cabbage and carrot.
Step 3
Place the chopped vegetables into a food chopper or vegetable dicer and finely mince them. It’s best to process the firmer vegetables first.
Step 4
Add 2 crab sticks (shredded or chopped) and 1 sausage (sliced or chopped).
Step 5
Crack 2 eggs into the mixture.
Step 6
Season with a pinch of salt and a pinch of black pepper.
Step 7
Use the handle of the food chopper to mix everything together. Just a few pumps and it’s done! Easy, right?
Step 8
Melt 1 knob of butter in a frying pan over medium heat.
Step 9
Pour the mixed vegetable and egg mixture into the frying pan.
Step 10
Once the bottom layer is cooked to a nice golden brown, carefully fold it in half using a spatula.
Step 11
Using your spatula, fold it in half again. (To prevent the filling from falling apart, make sure the bottom is well-cooked before folding!)
Step 12
Hold the toast upright on its sides and cook for a short while until the edges are also golden brown and crispy.
Step 13
Once fully cooked, stack the two folded patties on top of each other.
Step 14
Transfer the cooked patties to a plate and let them cool slightly. (They actually taste great just like this too! ^^)
Step 15
Clean the frying pan thoroughly. Without adding any oil, toast the bread slices on both sides until golden brown. Using a Korean ‘hotteok’ flipper is convenient as it leaves nice grill marks and toasts the bread quickly. ^^
Step 16
Let the toasted bread cool down a bit.
Step 17
Now, let’s start layering! ^^ Place one slice of bread, then 1 slice of cheese, and spread a layer of ketchup.
Step 18
Add one of the cooked cabbage patties, then spread another layer of ketchup.
Step 19
Lightly sprinkle some Muscovado sugar (unrefined cane sugar) over the patty. This adds a lovely caramel note.
Step 20
Now, place the second cabbage patty on top.
Step 21
Add another slice of cheese, and finally, top it with the second slice of toasted bread.
Step 22
And there you have it! The final assembly of your street toast. A satisfyingly thick cabbage toast is complete!
Step 23
Using a bread knife, carefully cut the street toast in half through the middle. It looks so appealing!
Step 24
Ta-da! Look how incredibly thick this cabbage toast is! Enjoy your delicious homemade street toast!
