Cooking Instructions
Step 1
The secret to “Kukdae Tteokbokki” is the chewy rice cakes! Prepare 500g of rice cakes specifically for tteokbokki. If they are stuck together, a quick rinse under running water should help separate them.
Step 2
Now, prepare the pot for simmering. Pour in about 4 cups (approximately 800ml) of anchovy broth. If you don’t have ingredients to make broth, you can use 4 cups of water and add 2 tablespoons of fish sauce for seasoning. Add all the sauce ingredients: 2 Tbsp gochujang, 3 Tbsp gochugaru, 6 Tbsp sugar, and 2 Tbsp mashed onion. Stir well to dissolve the paste. Bring the mixture to a boil over high heat. Once boiling, add the prepared rice cakes and fish cakes. Reduce the heat to medium. Simmering for a while is key to allowing the flavors to meld and penetrate the rice cakes and fish cakes.
Step 3
As the tteokbokki thickens and the sauce becomes slightly reduced, it’s time for the final touches. Add 2-3 pre-boiled eggs and 1 stalk of green onion, chopped into bite-sized pieces. Let it simmer for another moment, and your “Kukdae Tteokbokki” is complete!
Step 4
This recipe is simple yet incredibly delicious. Chewy rice cakes truly make the best tteokbokki! Enjoy it while it’s warm.
