Tteokbokki Ingredients

  • 2 servings of Tteokbokki rice cakes (approx. 300g)
  • 2 sheets of fish cake (eomuk)
  • A pinch of sesame seeds (for garnish)
  • A dash of sesame oil (for finishing)

Delicious Sauce

  • 1 Tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 Tbsp gochujang (Korean chili paste)
  • 1 Tbsp corn syrup (or rice syrup)
  • 3 cups kelp stock (approx. 600ml)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, rinse the tteokbokki rice cakes under water to prepare them. If the cakes are stuck together, gently separate them for easier cooking. Cut the fish cakes into bite-sized pieces, about 2-3 cm square.

Step 1

Step 2

In a pot, add a piece of kelp (about 5×5 cm) and 3 cups of water. Bring to a boil. Once boiling, remove the kelp and add 1 tablespoon of soy sauce to the stock to enhance its savory flavor.

Step 2

Step 3

To the prepared kelp stock, add 2 tablespoons of gochujang and 1 tablespoon of corn syrup. Whisk well to dissolve any lumps. Properly mixing the sauce ensures a clean and delicious tteokbokki broth.

Step 3

Step 4

Add all the cut fish cakes and tteokbokki rice cakes to the pot. Make sure the rice cakes and fish cakes are submerged in the sauce.

Step 4

Step 5

After adding the ingredients, gently stir once to combine everything evenly. Then, cover the pot and simmer over medium-low heat for about 10 minutes. Cook until the rice cakes are soft and have absorbed the flavors well.

Step 5

Step 6

After about 10 minutes of simmering, the sauce will thicken and the rice cakes and fish cakes will be coated in a delicious glaze. You can adjust the cooking time to achieve your preferred sauce consistency.

Step 6

Step 7

Just before turning off the heat, sprinkle a pinch of sesame seeds and a drizzle of sesame oil for an added nutty aroma and delicious finish. Serve your glossy, appetizing tteokbokki in a bowl and enjoy!
