Rice Bowl Ingredients

  • 2 bowls of cooked rice
  • 1/3 block of firm tofu
  • 1/4 onion
  • 1/2 green bell pepper
  • 2 leaves of cabbage
  • 1 tsp toasted sesame seeds
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 2 Tbsp cooking oil

Savory Sauce

  • 1 Tbsp soybean paste (doenjang)
  • 1 tsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp chopped green onion
  • 1 tsp minced garlic
  • 1 Tbsp cooking wine (mirin)
  • Pinch of black pepper (optional for very young children)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, gently press the tofu to remove excess water. Cut it into bite-sized cubes, about 1.5cm. Heat 1 tablespoon of cooking oil in a non-stick pan over medium heat. Add the tofu cubes and pan-fry them until golden brown on all sides. This step helps the tofu hold its shape and adds a delicious nutty flavor. Set the fried tofu aside on a plate.

Finely mince the onion. Wash and pat dry the green bell pepper and cabbage, then finely chop or shred them. (It’s best to chop them very finely for young children.) Add the remaining 1 tablespoon of cooking oil to the same pan over medium heat. Add the minced onion, bell pepper, and cabbage. Sauté until the vegetables become translucent and slightly softened, allowing their natural sweetness to develop.

Once the vegetables are sautéed, add all the sauce ingredients to the pan: soybean paste, soy sauce, sugar, chopped green onion, minced garlic, cooking wine, and black pepper. Stir everything together with the vegetables and cook for about 1-2 minutes until the sauce thickens slightly and coats the ingredients. Adjust the amount of soybean paste to suit your child’s taste preference.

Now, gently add the pre-fried tofu cubes back into the pan with the vegetable sauce. Carefully stir everything together, ensuring the tofu doesn’t break apart. Continue to cook for about 30 seconds to 1 minute, just long enough for the tofu to absorb the flavors of the sauce.

Just before turning off the heat, sprinkle in the toasted sesame seeds and drizzle with sesame oil. Give it a final gentle stir to combine. This step adds a wonderful aroma and nutty finish to the dish.
