Ingredients

  • 40 perilla leaves
  • 1 onion
  • A little bit of carrot

Seasoning

  • 2.5 Tbsp fish sauce
  • 1.5 Tbsp red pepper flakes
  • 0.5 Tbsp minced garlic
  • 1 Tbsp plum extract
  • 0.5 Tbsp ginger syrup
  • 0.5 Tbsp sesame seeds
  • 0.5 Tbsp perilla oil

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Prepare 40 perilla leaves. Wash them under running water. For extra cleanliness, you can soak them in a mixture of water and 1 tablespoon of vinegar for about 5 minutes, then rinse. Stand the leaves upright to drain any excess water. This prevents the dish from becoming too watery.

Let’s make the seasoning! You can substitute sesame oil for perilla oil if preferred.

In a microwave-safe container, layer 2-3 perilla leaves, sliced onion, and shredded carrot. Spoon some of the seasoning mixture over each layer. Repeat this process, alternating between perilla leaves, vegetables, and seasoning. Finally, place the remaining perilla leaves on top, facing down. This helps prevent the top leaves from drying out and ensures even seasoning distribution.

Microwave for 2 minutes. Be careful not to overcook, as this can make the perilla leaves tough. Microwave only briefly to slightly wilt the leaves. They are done when they have softened slightly. This is your completed microwave-steamed perilla leaf dish!
