How to Make Baked Potatoes in the Microwave
Try this easy recipe using small potatoes in the microwave. It tastes just like baked potato! Perfect for a quick snack.
Ingredients- 2 small potatoes (about the size of an egg)
- 1 plastic bag (microwave-safe)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
We’ll be using two small potatoes, roughly the size of an egg. Smaller potatoes cook faster in the microwave, making this an even quicker treat.
Step 2
Since we’re keeping the skin on, wash the potatoes thoroughly under running water. Scrub away any dirt or debris. Don’t worry about drying them completely; leave them slightly damp for the next step.
Step 3
Place the slightly damp potatoes into a microwave-safe plastic bag. To allow steam to escape, either leave the bag opening slightly ajar or carefully poke 1-2 small slits (about 1cm long) in the bag with a knife or scissors. This prevents the bag from bursting and helps the potato steam gently, ensuring a moist result.
Step 4
Microwave the prepared bag for approximately 5 minutes. (Cooking time may vary depending on your microwave’s wattage.) After microwaving, test the potato by piercing the thickest part with a chopstick or skewer. If it slides in easily and smoothly, the potato is perfectly cooked. If it feels firm or resistant, continue microwaving in 1-minute increments, checking for doneness each time. You’re looking for a tender interior, not a firm, uncooked texture.
Step 5
Carefully remove the hot bag from the microwave and transfer the cooked potatoes to a plate. As the excess steam escapes, any surface moisture will evaporate, contributing to the delicious, slightly crisp texture reminiscent of oven-baked potatoes.
Step 6
Let the potatoes cool slightly, then peel off the skin and enjoy. The fluffy, tender flesh inside has a flavor remarkably similar to oven-baked potatoes, a delightful surprise compared to steaming or boiling. It truly tastes like a baked potato!
Step 7
For an enhanced flavor experience, consider serving with a sprinkle of salt, a dollop of butter, or a dash of parsley. It’s best enjoyed immediately while still warm!
Step 8
The image on the left shows potatoes the size of an egg cooked for 5 minutes in the microwave, while the one on the right shows larger potatoes (like those sold at rest stops) cooked for 4 minutes. Cooking times can differ based on potato variety, size, and microwave power. Always rely on the chopstick test to ensure they are cooked through. I personally prefer using ‘Dubaek’ potatoes grown at home, as they have a wonderful flavor when baked this way.
