Main Ingredients

  • Tteokbokki rice cakes 200g (use your preferred type)
  • Vienna sausages 100g
  • Fish cakes (sheet type) 100g
  • Green onion 1/6 stalk
  • Cheongyang chili pepper 1 (for added spiciness)

Cream Sauce Ingredients

  • Cooking oil 1 Tbsp
  • Minced garlic 1 Tbsp
  • Heavy cream 1 Cup (200ml)
  • Milk 1 Cup (200ml)
  • Sliced cheddar cheese 3 slices
  • Salt 1/4 tsp (or to taste)
  • Chicken stock 1/4 tsp (optional, for enhanced flavor)
  • Ground black pepper 1/4 tsp (or to taste)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

For the tteokbokki rice cakes, feel free to use your favorite kind. To achieve a chewy yet tender texture, I recommend soaking the rice cakes in hot water for about 30 minutes before using them.

Step 1

Step 2

Once softened, cut the rice cakes into bite-sized pieces. Gently separate them if they stick together.

Step 2

Step 3

Now, let’s prepare the other ingredients for our tteokbokki. Make sure everything is washed and ready.

Step 3

Step 4

Finely chop the green onion. This will add a wonderful aromatic flavor to the dish.

Step 4

Step 5

Slice the Cheongyang chili pepper diagonally. If you enjoy a spicier kick, you can leave the seeds in.

Step 5

Step 6

Score the Vienna sausages with a knife. This helps them cook evenly and absorb the sauce better, also making them look more appealing.

Step 6

Step 7

Heat a pan over medium heat and add 1 Tbsp of cooking oil. Add the minced garlic and chopped green onion, and sauté until fragrant.

Step 7

Step 8

Be careful not to burn the garlic and onion. Stir-fry them gently until they become tender and release their sweet aroma. You’ll know it’s ready when the kitchen fills with a delightful smell.

Step 8

Step 9

Once the green onions are softened, pour in 1 cup of milk and 1 cup of heavy cream. This is where the creaminess comes in! Stir gently and bring to a simmer, then reduce the heat slightly.

Step 9

Step 10

When the cream sauce starts to simmer, add the prepared rice cakes, Vienna sausages, and fish cakes. Your cream tteokbokki is starting to take shape!

Step 10

Step 11

Now, add the 3 slices of sliced cheddar cheese. As the cheese melts, it will thicken the sauce and make it incredibly rich and decadent. Keep stirring to ensure it melts smoothly without clumping.

Step 11

Step 12

Once the rice cakes are fully cooked and the sauce has reached your desired thick consistency, add the sliced Cheongyang chili peppers. Let it simmer for another moment to infuse the spicy flavor.

Step 12

Step 13

Time for seasoning! Add 1/4 tsp of salt and taste. Adjust the saltiness according to your preference. It’s always best to taste and adjust as you go.

Step 13

Step 14

To elevate the flavor even further, stir in 1/4 tsp of chicken stock. If you don’t have chicken stock, you can omit it or use a small amount of other seasonings you have on hand, like fish sauce, soy sauce, or MSG.

Step 14

Step 15

And there you have it – a rich, creamy, and flavorful cream tteokbokki, thanks to the generous amount of heavy cream and cheese! If you love a thick and decadent cream sauce, you’ll absolutely adore this recipe. Make sure to give it a try!

Step 15

Step 16

As a bonus, here’s a picture of leftover cream sauce transformed into a creamy risotto for a late-night snack! I even topped it with some sirloin steak I had at home for a truly satisfying meal. This recipe is a guaranteed hit, so don’t hesitate to try it!
