Juicy & Flavorful! Gordon Ramsay-Style Steak
Perfect for Keto & Low-Carb Diets! Impress Guests with this Restaurant-Quality Beef Steak, Masterfully Seared Using Gordon Ramsay’s Method
Here’s the ultimate steak recipe, a cornerstone of the low-carb and ketogenic diet! Today, I’m sharing Gordon Ramsay’s secret to perfectly searing a steak. You can cook a restaurant-worthy steak quickly and easily right in your home, using just a frying pan – no oven required!
Ingredients- Steak cut of beef (thick cuts recommended)
- Minced garlic
- Butter
- Olive oil
- Onion
- Fresh herbs (rosemary, thyme, etc.)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Take your steak out of the refrigerator about 20 minutes before cooking to allow it to come to room temperature. As I’ve mentioned in many low-carb recipes, cooking a cold steak straight from the fridge results in a burnt exterior and a cold, unappetizing interior. Before searing, generously season the steak with salt and pepper. If you have fresh herbs like rosemary or thyme, sprinkle them over the steak to enhance its aroma and flavor. Lightly drizzling with olive oil also helps prevent the steak from drying out.
Step 2
Heat a heavy-bottomed frying pan over high heat until it’s very hot. Add a generous amount of olive oil, ensuring the pan is well-coated. A searing hot pan is crucial for developing a beautiful crust and locking in the juices.
Step 3
Carefully place the seasoned steak into the scorching hot pan. Be mindful of oil splattering, as high heat can cause it. To avoid burns, you can use tongs or gently slide the steak into the pan. Remember, safety first in the kitchen!
Step 4
After placing the steak in the pan, let it sear undisturbed for about 30 to 60 seconds, or until the sizzling sound begins to subside slightly. Then, flip the steak over. You’ll notice a lovely brown crust forming on the seared side.
Step 5
While the other side of the steak is searing, take your minced garlic and, using a spoon, gently rub or spread it onto the top surface of the steak. This ‘rubbing’ technique is a key point in Gordon Ramsay’s method for a flavorful steak! For a steak weighing approximately 250-400g, about half a tablespoon to one tablespoon of minced garlic is sufficient. The garlic will infuse its aromatic essence into the meat.
Step 6
Pour off any excess olive oil from the pan, then add a tablespoon of butter. As the butter melts, tilt the pan and use a spoon to continuously baste the steak with the melted butter. Repeating this basting process helps to coat the steak evenly and build up a rich, buttery flavor.
Step 7
Once the garlic is fragrant and golden brown, and the steak has been searing for about 3 to 4 minutes in total, turn off the heat completely. Transfer the steak to a piece of aluminum foil, and tightly wrap the steak to allow it to rest. This ‘resting’ period is vital for the steak to finish cooking internally from its residual heat.
Step 8
Let the steak rest for at least 5 minutes. Wrapping it in foil ensures that the internal temperature equalizes, resulting in a perfectly cooked steak with a tender, juicy interior and a beautifully seared exterior.
Step 9
While the steak is resting, add the sliced onion to the same pan used for searing the steak. Sauté the onions in the flavorful pan drippings – they will absorb the delicious essence of the steak, making them incredibly tasty.
Step 10
After resting, slice the steak and arrange it on a plate. Serve with the sautéed onions on the side, and your impressive Gordon Ramsay-style steak is ready! It’s perfect for entertaining guests. By following these simple yet effective tips for searing, anyone can create a fantastic steak at home. Adjust the cooking time slightly to achieve your preferred level of doneness.
