  • 2 tsp Brown Sugar
  • 1 Tbsp Cooking Wine (Mirin or similar)
  • A pinch of Black Pepper

Royal Stir-fry Sauce

  • 0.5 Tbsp Soy Sauce
  • 1 Tbsp Oyster Sauce
  • 2 Tbsp Honey (or corn syrup)
  • 1 Tbsp Sesame Oil
  • A little Sesame Seeds (toasted)
  • A pinch of Black Pepper

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Prepare all the ingredients for a delicious Royal Stir-fry. Wash and pat dry the vegetables, then chop them into the required sizes. Having everything ready will make the cooking process smoother and faster.

Step 1

Step 2

If using frozen Joraengi tteok, soak them in cold water for about 30 minutes to thaw. This prevents the rice cakes from sticking together and ensures they cook up soft and chewy. After thawing, drain them well in a colander.

Step 2

Step 3

In a bowl, combine the minced beef with all the marinade ingredients: soy sauce, minced garlic, brown sugar, cooking wine, and black pepper. Mix well with your hands, ensuring the seasoning is evenly distributed. Let it marinate for about 10 minutes; this helps to tenderize the meat and remove any gamey flavor.

Step 3

Step 4

Peel the onion and carrot, then slice them thinly into matchsticks. Similarly, cut the green onion into long, thin strips. Cutting the vegetables finely will result in a pleasant texture when stir-fried with the tteok.

Step 4

Step 5

Heat a little cooking oil in a lightly oiled pan over medium-high heat. Add the marinated minced beef and stir-fry, breaking it apart with chopsticks or a spoon, until it’s no longer pink. Once the beef is cooked, add the prepared carrots and thawed Joraengi tteok. Pour in the sauce ingredients: honey, soy sauce, and oyster sauce. Stir-fry everything together until the sauce coats the ingredients well and the rice cakes start to soften. Continue cooking over medium heat to allow the tteok to absorb the flavors.

Step 5

Step 6

When the tteok has absorbed the sauce and become tender, add the julienned onion and green onion to the pan. Increase the heat to high and stir-fry quickly for about 30 seconds, just until the vegetables are slightly tender but still retain a pleasant crunch. Avoid overcooking, as this can make the vegetables mushy.

Step 6

Step 7

Just before turning off the heat, drizzle in the sesame oil and sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds. Toss everything gently to combine. Adding sesame oil at the end preserves its fragrant aroma.

Step 7

Step 8

Finally, add a final pinch of black pepper for a hint of spice. Give everything a final mix. Your delicious Joraengi Tteok Royal Stir-fry is now complete! Serve immediately while warm for the best taste and texture.
