Main Ingredients

  • Assorted Fish Cakes (Eomuk) 1 pack (300g)
  • Water 500mL
  • Soy Sauce for Soup (Gukganjang) 1 Tbsp
  • Minced Garlic 0.5 Tbsp
  • Dried Kelp (Dashima) a small piece
  • Bonito Flakes (Katsuobushi) 1 Tbsp

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, pour 500mL of water into a pot. Add 1 Tbsp of soy sauce for soup (Gukganjang) and 0.5 Tbsp of minced garlic. Along with these, add the dried kelp and 1 Tbsp of bonito flakes, which are key to the umami flavor, and bring it to a boil. Boiling the kelp and bonito flakes together will create a richer and deeper broth.

Step 2

Once the broth starts boiling, use a sieve to carefully strain out the dried kelp and bonito flakes, preparing a clear broth. This step ensures the soup remains clean and maintains its pure flavor. While straining the broth, cut the assorted fish cakes into bite-sized pieces. Typically, cutting them into small squares or pieces works well.

Step 3

Add the prepared fish cakes to the clear broth and simmer over medium heat for about 5 to 7 minutes. It’s important to let the fish cakes cook gently, allowing their delicious flavor to infuse into the broth. If you have crown daisy (ssukgat) on hand, adding it at the end will enhance the aroma and flavor beautifully. Even without crown daisy, this recipe will result in a perfectly refreshing and tasty fish cake soup. On days like these when a cool breeze blows, warm up your body and soul with a bowl of hearty fish cake soup. Have a wonderful weekend!
