Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, take your eggs out of the refrigerator and let them sit at room temperature for at least 30 minutes. Boiling cold eggs directly can lead to uneven cooking and cracked shells, with the contents leaking out. The first crucial tip for perfectly boiled eggs is to ‘bring your eggs to room temperature’.

Step 1

Step 2

Many people boil eggs and water together, or start timing once the water boils. However, there’s much debate about when exactly to start timing. Some say when water starts to bubble, others when it’s a rolling boil, and some from the very beginning. Because the boiling point varies depending on the number of eggs and water volume, it’s common to not achieve the desired level of softness.

Step 2

Step 3

To avoid this confusion, I recommend boiling the water first. If you’re unsure about the water amount, place the eggs gently in the pot and fill it with water just enough to cover them. Then, carefully remove the eggs. This simple step ensures you have the perfect amount of water for boiling.

Step 3

Step 4

While not strictly necessary, if you want to easily peel your eggs after boiling, add 1/2 Tbsp of salt and 1 Tbsp of vinegar to the water. These ingredients help the egg whites coagulate firmly, preventing leakage if the shell cracks, and also make the shells easier to remove. It’s a highly recommended tip!

Step 4

Step 5

Now, bring the water in the pot to a rolling boil over high heat. Ensure it’s sufficiently hot before adding the eggs.

Step 5

Step 6

Once the water is at a rolling boil, carefully lower the eggs into the boiling water to prevent them from cracking. Be cautious of splashing hot water.

Step 6

Step 7

Immediately after placing the eggs in the water, set your timer. The golden time for perfect soft-boiled eggs is either 7 or 8 minutes, depending on your preferred level of doneness. I personally favor the 7-minute mark for a creamier yolk!

Step 7

Step 8

While the eggs are boiling, some might worry about them cracking. However, as mentioned earlier, by thoroughly removing the chill from the eggs beforehand, you can significantly prevent them from cracking during the boiling process.

Step 8

Step 9

As soon as my 7-minute timer went off, I removed two eggs for a softer yolk. Immediately after removing them, plunge them into cold or ice water until they are no longer hot. This stops the residual heat from cooking them further and helps the shell separate from the white, making peeling much easier.

Step 9

Step 10

The remaining eggs were boiled for an additional minute (totaling 8 minutes) and then also cooled in cold water. When I peeled them, they came off surprisingly easily! A helpful tip: start peeling from the rounder end of the egg rather than the pointed end for an even smoother experience.

Step 10

Step 11

Here’s a look at the 7-minute soft-boiled egg. The whites are perfectly firm, and the yolk is wonderfully creamy and runny, exactly how I like it.

Step 11

Step 12

This is the egg boiled for 8 minutes. The whites are fully cooked, and while the edges of the yolk are set, the center remains lusciously soft and semi-liquid.

Step 12

Step 13

Even a difference of just one minute creates a noticeable contrast when comparing the two eggs side-by-side. For my palate, the 7-minute egg is ideal, with a fully cooked yet tender white and a yolk that’s uniformly soft. Adjust the time between 7 and 8 minutes to find your personal perfect soft-boiled egg!
