Homemade Sweet Strawberry Latte
Easy Strawberry Syrup Recipe: Perfect for Kids’ Snacks! 🍓
To celebrate the increased activity of the past three weeks since the new school term began, I’ve prepared a special treat for my child. I went to the supermarket and found beautiful strawberries on a buy-one-get-one-free offer for 5,800 won! Although they were smaller in size, they were just perfect for making homemade strawberry syrup to enjoy a sweet strawberry latte. Gift your child a healthy and delicious snack with this recipe!
Strawberry Syrup Ingredients
- 1kg fresh strawberries
- 500g granulated sugar
- 1 Tbsp lemon juice
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
This step is crucial for thoroughly cleaning the strawberries and removing any pesticides or debris. Fill a bowl with water, add 1 tablespoon of vinegar and 1 tablespoon of baking soda, and mix well. Submerge the strawberries in this solution for about 5 minutes to let them soak. This ensures your strawberries are safe to consume.
Step 2
After soaking, carefully rinse the strawberries multiple times under running water. Be gentle to avoid bruising the delicate fruit. Once thoroughly rinsed, place the strawberries in a colander to drain excess water.
Step 3
Now, it’s time to hull the strawberries. While this part requires a bit of manual work, the delicious result will make you glad you did it. Any small bits of stem missed can be easily removed by floating them in water, as they tend to rise to the surface.
Step 4
After hulling, it’s important to weigh the strawberries. This is key for achieving the correct sugar-to-fruit ratio, which ensures good preservation and proper jam consistency if you were making jam. My hulled strawberries weighed exactly 1kg. We’ll use this weight to guide our sugar measurement.
Step 5
While a blender is convenient, a key charm of fruit syrup is the delightful texture of the fruit pieces. Therefore, instead of using a blender, I’ll be mashing them by hand. Wearing hygienic gloves makes the process even more enjoyable! Tip: Avoid mashing the strawberries too finely; leave some chunks for a pleasant bite.
Step 6
Add 500g of granulated sugar to the mashed strawberries and mix in 1 tablespoon of lemon juice until well combined. If you wanted to make strawberry jam, you would then simmer this mixture over medium heat until thickened. However, today we’re creating a fresh ‘strawberry syrup’ without cooking, preserving the fresh fruit! Simply mixing the sugar and lemon juice completes the strawberry syrup.
Step 7
Transfer the finished strawberry syrup into a clean, sterilized heatproof glass jar. It’s a good idea to leave a little space at the top. Store this homemade strawberry syrup in the refrigerator. Enjoy it by mixing it with milk for a delicious strawberry latte or with sparkling water for a refreshing strawberry ade!
