Crafting Quince Preserve to Enjoy as a Warm Tea This Winter
I’ve made a sweet and fragrant quince preserve to protect our family from colds this winter. Its delightful aroma will fill your home and uplift your spirits. A warm cup of quince tea made from this preserve is the perfect way to stay healthy!
Ingredients- Quince: 1 part (by weight or volume)
- Sugar: 1 part (by weight or volume)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
The first step to making delicious quince preserve is to prepare the quince itself. The quinces in the picture were brought by my husband from a mountain hike. While their surfaces might not be perfectly clean due to growing without much care, their fragrance is absolutely wonderful! The aroma of the quince is key to the preserve’s flavor, so choosing quinces with a good scent is important.
Step 2
While in the past people used knives to slice quinces, today’s mandoline slicers allow for much faster and easier preparation. Slicing the quince thinly with a mandoline helps it mix well with sugar and mature more effectively. Slice your quinces thinly and easily!
Step 3
Now it’s time to add sugar to the sliced quinces in a 1:1 ratio. Maintaining this 1:1 ratio of quince to sugar is the secret to a perfect quince preserve. Precise measurements are crucial for a delicious outcome, so be sure to follow this guideline.
Step 4
Gently mix the sugar and quinces together until well combined. Make sure the sugar coats all the quince slices evenly by massaging them together. This process will start drawing out the moisture from the quinces, which is the beginning of making the preserve.
Step 5
Transfer the sugar-coated quinces into a clean jar. It’s best to use a glass jar with a tight-fitting lid. Once in the jar, seal it well and let it mature in a cool, dark place for about a month. As time passes, the quince’s natural flavor and aroma will blend with the sugar, developing a rich and complex taste.
Step 6
Although quinces are sometimes called ‘ugly fruit’ due to their appearance, their scent is so captivating that it completely overshadows their looks. It’s this wonderful quince aroma that makes it impossible to go through winter without quince tea! The gentle fragrance will fill your home, making it feel warm and pleasant.
Step 7
The longer you wait, the deeper the flavor and aroma of your quince preserve will become. Over time, the quince’s essence harmonizes beautifully with the sugar, resulting in an even richer and more profound taste. You’ll truly appreciate the rewards of your patience.
