Homemade Potato Gnocchi: A Generous & Delicious Treat
How to Make Soft and Chewy Potato Gnocchi at Home
Do you always feel like restaurant portions of gnocchi are never enough? Now you can make and enjoy generous servings of gnocchi right at home, tailored to your exact taste! It’s wonderful to have so much of this delightful dish, made just the way you like it. Let’s get started with making homemade gnocchi!
For the Gnocchi Dough- 3 medium potatoes (approx. 300-400g)
- 150g all-purpose flour (adjust based on potato moisture)
- 1 fresh egg yolk
- A pinch of fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Peel and dice the thoroughly washed potatoes into bite-sized pieces. Place them in a pot, cover with water, add a pinch of salt, and boil until the potatoes are completely tender (they should be easily pierced with a fork). Drain the potatoes thoroughly. While still hot, mash them until smooth using a potato masher or fork. Let the mashed potatoes cool slightly. Then, add about half the weight of the potatoes in flour (150g).
Step 2
Add 1 fresh egg yolk to the mashed potato and flour mixture. Gently combine the ingredients.
Step 3
Avoid overworking the dough, as this can make the gnocchi tough. Mix just until the flour is incorporated and a cohesive dough forms. Lightly flour your work surface and transfer the dough. Gently knead it just enough to bring it together.
Step 4
Shape the dough into long ropes, about 1.5 to 2 cm in thickness. Gently roll the dough on your work surface or between your hands.
Step 5
Cut the dough ropes into approximately 2cm pieces. Using a fork or a gnocchi board (or even the back of a chopstick), gently press into each piece to create ridges. These ridges help the sauce adhere better and add a lovely appearance. Shape them into a slight curve while pressing with the fork.
Step 6
Bring a large pot of generously salted water to a rolling boil. Carefully drop the gnocchi into the boiling water. They are ready when they float to the surface (this usually takes about 2-3 minutes). Skim them out with a slotted spoon.
Step 7
Transfer the boiled gnocchi to a paper towel-lined plate to drain any excess water. Heat a skillet over medium heat with a little olive oil (or butter). Add the drained gnocchi and pan-fry them until they are golden brown and slightly crisp on the outside.
Step 8
Be gentle when flipping the gnocchi to prevent them from breaking. Turn them occasionally until they achieve a beautiful, golden hue all over. This step adds a wonderful depth of flavor and texture.
Step 9
Warm your cream sauce in a separate pan (or the same pan after removing the gnocchi). Add the pan-fried gnocchi to the warmed sauce and toss gently to coat. Serve the gnocchi and sauce onto a plate. Generously sprinkle with freshly grated Parmesan cheese and finish with a dusting of chopped parsley for a delightful homemade gnocchi dish!
