Ingredients

  • 1250ml Fresh Milk (let sit at room temperature for 30 minutes to remove chill)
  • 1 bottle of store-bought plain drinking yogurt (like Bulgaris) (at room temperature)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Prepare the fresh milk and the store-bought plain yogurt (or drinking yogurt) that will act as the starter culture. For the milk, letting it sit at room temperature for about 30 minutes beforehand helps with fermentation.

Step 1

Step 2

Pour the 1250ml of milk and the 1 bottle of store-bought plain yogurt into a clean, sanitized yogurt maker container or a heat-resistant glass jar. It’s important to mix them well to ensure there are no clumps.

Step 2

Step 3

If using a yogurt maker, do not plug it in yet. Securely close the lid of the container. This helps prevent external contamination and maintains a consistent fermentation environment.

Step 3

Step 4

Turn on the yogurt maker or create a warm environment (e.g., a kept warm oven, a pot wrapped in blankets) and let it ferment for at least 24 hours. The fermentation time can be adjusted based on your desired thickness and tanginess, but 24 hours is recommended as a minimum. Be mindful that fermenting for too long can result in a very sour taste.

Step 4

Step 5

After 24 hours, open the container to check the yogurt’s consistency. If it has set firmly when you gently scoop with a spoon, it’s a success! This homemade plain yogurt is best enjoyed chilled from the refrigerator. Feel free to add honey, fruits, or nuts according to your preference.
