Homemade Mulled Wine (Vin Chaud) for Cozy Winters
Recommended Winter Drink! Simple Mulled Wine Made with Wine
Warm up your body this winter with this traditional French drink, Vin Chaud. Making it at home is easy and incredibly rewarding.
Ingredients- 1/2 bottle Red Wine (approx. 375ml of a 750ml bottle)
- 1-2 Apples (washed)
- 1-2 Oranges (washed)
- A few Star Anise (about 2-3 pods)
- A few Cloves (about 3-5)
- A little Cinnamon Stick (1-2 sticks)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, thoroughly wash the apples and oranges that will add flavor and aroma to your mulled wine. Since you’ll be using them with the peel, it’s a good idea to scrub them with baking soda or coarse salt. Remove the core from the washed apples and slice them into 1-2cm thick rounds or cut them into quarters. Slice the oranges similarly.
Step 2
Now, prepare a pot for making the mulled wine. Pour the sliced apples and oranges into the pot, followed by half a bottle of red wine. Add the star anise, cloves, and cinnamon sticks to enhance the fragrance. It’s important to simmer with the lid off to allow the alcohol to evaporate and the flavors to meld. Start heating over medium-low heat.
Step 3
Simmer gently over medium-low heat for at least 10 minutes, allowing the alcohol to evaporate and the fruity flavors and sweetness to infuse into the wine. Stir occasionally while simmering to help the fruit flavors release more effectively. If you prefer a sweeter drink, you can add a little honey or sugar to adjust the sweetness to your liking.
