Perfect for Chilly Days! How to Make Honey Hotteok Bread with Molten Honey Filling
Though spring is truly here, we still have days that call for a warm, comforting snack! Today, we’re making delicious Honey Hotteok Bread right at home, just like you’d find at a bakery. You know, the kind where a river of sweet honey flows out when you take a bite after a quick toast on the pan or in a toaster? Someone in my family absolutely adores these, so I often buy them. This time, I decided to try making them easily using frozen dough. Homemade is always best because you can fill it with as much of your favorite sweet filling as you want! Let’s get started on making these simple and delightful Honey Hotteok Breads with frozen dough!
Ingredients- 6 frozen sweet pastry doughs
- 20g roasted sunflower seeds
- 70g organic unrefined sugar
- 1 1/2 tsp cinnamon powder
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, thaw the frozen dough overnight in the refrigerator. The next day, let it sit at room temperature for about 20-30 minutes to remove any remaining chill. This will make the dough much easier to handle.
Step 2
Once the dough has reached room temperature, gently roll it into a ball and set it aside while you prepare the filling. This brief resting period helps the dough relax.
Step 3
In a small bowl, combine the roasted sunflower seeds, organic unrefined sugar, and cinnamon powder. Mix them well to create the sweet honey filling. You’ll have a wonderfully aromatic cinnamon-sugar mixture ready to go.
Step 4
Now it’s time to shape the hotteok bread! Use a rolling pin to flatten the thawed dough into a circle. Spoon about 20g of the prepared filling (roughly one heaping teaspoon) into the center.
Step 5
Carefully pinch the edges of the dough together to seal the filling inside, ensuring none leaks out. Gently roll the dough into a smooth ball. It’s important to seal it well to prevent the sweet filling from escaping during baking.
Step 6
Place the shaped dough onto a pan. Lightly press it down with your hand or a rolling pin to flatten it slightly. Decorate the top with roasted sunflower seeds for a lovely visual appeal and a satisfying crunch.
Step 7
Allow the shaped dough to undergo a second proofing in a warm place (around 27-30°C or 80-86°F) for 50 to 60 minutes, or until it has roughly doubled in size. You can use your oven’s proofing setting or place it in a box with a cup of warm water.
Step 8
Once the second proofing is complete and the dough has puffed up nicely, place a sheet of parchment paper (Teflon sheet) on top of the dough. This will help prevent the top from burning in the oven and ensure even baking.
Step 9
Place another baking pan on top of the parchment paper to weigh it down. Bake in a preheated oven at 170°C (340°F) for 12 to 15 minutes, or until golden brown. Your delicious homemade Honey Hotteok Bread is ready! Enjoy it warm for the best experience of that wonderful molten honey filling.
