Homemade Fig Jam: A Sweet Summer Delight
Capture the season’s sweetness with this delightful homemade fig jam!
This recipe was created during the peak fig season, resulting in a jam bursting with natural flavor. Perfect for spreading on toast, mixing into yogurt, or enjoying with crackers, this homemade fig jam is a versatile treat. Let’s make some delicious jam together!
Ingredients- 10 ripe fresh figs
- Sugar (half the weight of the figs)
- 1-2 drops of lemon juice
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Prepare 10 ripe fresh figs. They should be plump and slightly yielding to the touch, but not mushy.
Step 2
Gently wash the figs under cool running water to remove any dirt or debris.
Step 3
Trim off the stem end and the very bottom tip of each fig.
Step 4
Cut each fig into quarters. Cutting them into quarters rather than very small pieces will give the jam a pleasant texture.
Step 5
Place the quartered figs into a deep pot or saucepan.
Step 6
Add sugar. The general ratio is half the weight of the figs. For example, if you have 600g of figs, use 300g of sugar. You can adjust the sweetness to your preference.
Step 7
Put on disposable gloves and gently mash the figs with your hands in the pot. It’s okay if there are still some small chunks; they add a lovely texture to the jam.
Step 8
Once the figs and sugar are well combined, you’re ready to start cooking.
Step 9
Do NOT add any water! The jam will form from the natural juices of the figs and the sugar. Stir continuously with a spatula to prevent sticking to the bottom of the pot as it cooks.
Step 10
Once the jam begins to boil, reduce the heat to medium-low. You’ll hear it starting to bubble. Keep stirring to ensure even cooking and prevent burning.
Step 11
As the jam thickens and the color deepens, lower the heat further to low. At this stage, it can scorch easily, so stir very frequently for another 2-3 minutes until it reaches your desired consistency.
Step 12
Your delicious fig jam is ready when it has reached the desired thickness!
Step 13
Add a drop or two of lemon juice for enhanced flavor and preservation. Be careful not to add too much, as it can make the jam too tart.
Step 14
Sterilize your glass jars by boiling them in water for about 5 minutes. Ensure they are completely dry before filling.
Step 15
Carefully spoon the warm fig jam into the sterilized jars. Filling them close to the top makes them easy to serve. Let cool completely before sealing and refrigerating.
