Ingredients for Cold Brew Extraction

  • Coarsely ground coffee beans 5 Tbsp
  • Cold filtered water or bottled water 250ml

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, prepare a clean glass container to store your cold brew concentrate. A shaker or bottle with measurement markings will be convenient. Add 5 tablespoons (about 50ml) of coarsely ground coffee and 250ml of cold water to the container. The typical ratio is 1 part coffee to 5 parts water.

Step 1

Step 2

Gently pour the 250ml of cold water into the container. Ensure you’re using cold water, as the temperature plays a crucial role in the extraction process.

Step 2

Step 3

Securely close the lid of the container and shake well to combine the coffee and water. Then, place the container in the refrigerator and let it steep for about 12 hours. This slow, low-temperature extraction is key to developing the smooth flavor and aroma characteristic of cold brew.

Step 3

Step 4

After 12 hours, it’s time to filter the coffee. Using a mesh filter (a metal strainer) will allow you to separate the coffee grounds from the concentrate more quickly than a paper filter, which can be quite time-consuming.

Step 4

Step 5

Place the mesh filter over another container or bowl, and carefully pour the steeped coffee mixture through it. The coffee grounds will be caught in the filter, allowing the clear cold brew concentrate to drip through.

Step 5

Step 6

Once all the grounds have been filtered out, transfer the resulting clear cold brew concentrate into a clean, airtight container. Stored in the refrigerator, this concentrate can be kept for several days. You should yield approximately 220ml of concentrate from this batch.

Step 6

Step 7

To enjoy your cold brew, begin by filling a glass with plenty of ice cubes. This will ensure your coffee stays wonderfully chilled.

Step 7

Step 8

Pour the cold brew concentrate over the ice. Using about half of the concentrate you just made will yield approximately two servings of iced cold brew. For a touch of sweetness, feel free to add syrup or honey to your liking.

Step 8

Step 9

Cold brew also pairs beautifully with milk. Mix equal parts cold brew concentrate and milk (1:1 ratio), add ice, and enjoy a creamy, rich beverage. If you prefer it sweeter, a dash of syrup will do the trick.
