Homemade Blueberry Compote
10-Minute Easy Blueberry Compote: Simpler Than Jam!
Received a bounty of blueberries from home? Don’t let them go to waste! Make this ‘Blueberry Compote,’ which is healthier and much easier to prepare than traditional jam, using significantly less sugar. It’s a versatile topping for yogurt or a delightful dessert on its own.
Blueberry Compote Ingredients- 200g fresh blueberries
- 60g granulated sugar (adjust to blueberry sweetness)
- 1 tsp store-bought lemon juice
Blueberry Yogurt Topping- 100g unsweetened plain yogurt
- 2 tsp prepared blueberry compote
- 100g unsweetened plain yogurt
- 2 tsp prepared blueberry compote
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, thoroughly wash the blueberries using a mild detergent or vinegar solution, rinsing them under running water multiple times. Drain excess water and place the clean blueberries into a saucepan.
Step 2
Add 60g of sugar to the blueberries. A standard ratio for blueberry compote is 3 parts fruit to 1 part sugar, but feel free to adjust the sugar amount based on your preference and the natural sweetness of the blueberries.
Step 3
Place the saucepan over medium-low heat. Using a spatula or spoon, gently stir to combine the sugar and blueberries. The key is to cook them without mashing the berries, keeping the fruit intact.
Step 4
Once you see the mixture starting to bubble around the edges of the pan, reduce the heat to low. This prevents the sugar from burning and allows the compote to simmer gently.
Step 5
As the sugar dissolves and the blueberries release their juices, the mixture will begin to boil. Set a timer for 10 minutes and let it simmer over low heat. This process concentrates the delicious blueberry flavor.
Step 6
Keep the lid off the pot while the compote is cooking. This helps the compote thicken and reduces the risk of overflow. Stir occasionally, about once every few minutes, to prevent sticking.
Step 7
Here is the blueberry compote after simmering for 10 minutes on low heat. Notice the glossy sheen and deepened color!
Step 8
Turn off the heat. While it’s still warm, the compote will seem quite liquid, but as it cools, it will thicken to a delightful pudding-like consistency, with the blueberry pieces still beautifully visible.
Step 9
Finally, stir in 1 teaspoon of store-bought lemon juice. This adds a touch of brightness that enhances the blueberry flavor and also acts as a natural preservative.
Step 10
Prepare a clean jar or a jar that has been sterilized by boiling water. Carefully spoon the prepared blueberry compote into the jar. Filling the jar while the compote is still hot helps create a good seal for longer storage.
Step 11
Once the jar is filled, let the compote cool down slightly before refrigerating. Properly stored in the refrigerator, it will last for about a week. For longer storage, it can be frozen for up to 3 months.
Step 12
Now, let’s make a quick and delicious blueberry yogurt! Simply spoon 2 teaspoons of the prepared blueberry compote over 100g of unsweetened plain yogurt. That’s it – you’re done!
Step 13
Look at that beautiful marbling effect! This homemade treat is far superior to store-bought yogurts, boasting a rich blueberry flavor and sweetness that truly shines.
Step 14
This sweet and tangy blueberry compote yogurt is perfect as a post-meal dessert or a healthy snack for children!
