- 1 Tbsp salted shrimp (minced finely)
- 2 Tbsp soup soy sauce
- 0.5 Tbsp sugar
- 1 Tbsp sesame oil
- 4 Tbsp fine gochugaru (Korean chili flakes)
- 1 Tbsp minced garlic
- 1 Tbsp salted shrimp (minced finely)
- 2 Tbsp soup soy sauce
- 0.5 Tbsp sugar
- 1 Tbsp sesame oil
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare the star of your delicious Sundae-gukbap: the sundae. Choose a tasty store-bought variety.
Step 2
Cut the prepared sundae into thick, bite-sized pieces, about 1.5-2cm thick. Cutting the sundae too thinly can cause it to break apart or burst while cooking, so a slightly thicker cut is better for texture and appearance. (The sundae shown is about 250g, which is roughly half of a standard store-bought pack!)
Step 3
Prepare 2 packs of store-bought beef bone broth. It’s perfectly fine to use broth that has been stored in the freezer. Don’t worry if it’s not completely thawed; it will break down as it boils.
Step 4
Make the spicy and flavorful seasoning paste (dadaegi). In a bowl, combine 4 Tbsp fine gochugaru, 1 Tbsp minced garlic, 1 Tbsp finely minced salted shrimp, 2 Tbsp soup soy sauce, 0.5 Tbsp sugar, and 1 Tbsp sesame oil. Mix everything thoroughly. This paste is the key to the soup’s delicious flavor!
Step 5
Pour the prepared beef bone broth into a pot and bring it to a boil over high heat.
Step 6
Once the broth is boiling vigorously, carefully add the sliced sundae.
Step 7
If you want to add more ingredients for a richer soup, you can also add pre-cooked meat like brisket (for example, ‘along-satae’) from your freezer. This will make your Sundae-gukbap even more hearty. Make good use of any hidden treasures in your freezer!
Step 8
By making it at home, you can add plenty of your desired ingredients to create an even more abundant Sundae-gukbap.
Step 9
Being able to enjoy plenty of sundae is the biggest charm of homemade Sundae-gukbap!
Step 10
Ladle the finished Sundae-gukbap generously into a hot earthenware pot (ttukbaegi). Top with the prepared spicy paste according to your preference, and garnish with fresh chives and nutty perilla seed powder for enhanced flavor and aroma. (Chives are optional.)
Step 11
Wow! Your Sundae-gukbap is ready with a fantastic visual that rivals a restaurant. Enjoy this warm and delicious meal conveniently made at home!
