Main Ingredients- 170g Ham (thick block ham or sliced ham)
- 2 servings of warm cooked rice (approx. 2 bowls)
- 1 sheet of dried seaweed (nori for sushi rolls)
- 1 slice of processed cheese
- A little fresh wasabi (adjust to taste)
Sushi Vinegar (Sushi Seasoning)- 3 Tbsp Rice vinegar (suggested: brown rice vinegar or apple cider vinegar)
- 2 Tbsp Brown sugar
- 3 tsp Salt (fine salt recommended)
- 1 piece of dried kelp (kombu, approx. 5x5cm)
- 3 Tbsp Rice vinegar (suggested: brown rice vinegar or apple cider vinegar)
- 2 Tbsp Brown sugar
- 3 tsp Salt (fine salt recommended)
- 1 piece of dried kelp (kombu, approx. 5x5cm)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare the ham. If using a block ham, slice it into bite-sized pieces (about 1cm thick). If using sliced ham, cut it in half lengthwise and then into 2-3 pieces each to create manageable portions.
Step 2
Place the sliced ham in a preheated pan without any added oil. Grill until lightly browned and slightly crispy. The ham’s own fat will render, making it moist and flavorful. Cook over medium heat rather than high heat for best results.
Step 3
In a small bowl, combine all the sushi vinegar ingredients: 3 tablespoons of rice vinegar, 2 tablespoons of brown sugar, 3 teaspoons of salt, and 1 piece of dried kelp. This balanced ratio is the foundation for delicious sushi rice.
Step 4
Microwave the bowl of sushi vinegar for about 20 seconds, or until the sugar and salt are completely dissolved and well combined with the vinegar. (Adjust microwaving time based on your microwave’s power).
Step 5
Pour the warmed sushi vinegar over the freshly cooked warm rice. Using a spatula, gently mix the rice to ensure the vinegar is evenly distributed without mashing the grains. Mixing while the rice is still hot helps it absorb the seasoning better.
Step 6
Prepare the garnishes. Use a mini flower-shaped cutter or a round cutter to shape the sliced cheese. Cut the sushi seaweed into long strips. (If you wish to create tulip shapes with the seaweed, use a punch tool or cut them out carefully. Alternatively, the long strips can be used as bands around the sushi rice.)
Step 7
Lightly wet your hands with water or vinegar to prevent sticking. Form the seasoned sushi rice into bite-sized portions. Once shaped, spread a very thin layer of fresh wasabi on top of each rice ball. The subtle kick of wasabi will enhance the ham’s flavor. (Omit or reduce the wasabi if you prefer less spice).
Step 8
Place a piece of the grilled ham on top of each prepared rice ball. Gently press down to secure the ham. Then, wrap a long strip of seaweed around the middle of the rice ball, like a band, to hold everything together and add a decorative touch.
Step 9
Finally, arrange the mini cheese flowers on top of the ham for a beautiful finish. Your delightful ham sushi rolls are now ready to be enjoyed! These colorful and delicious ham sushi rolls make for a special and satisfying meal.
