Leftover Gimbap Hack: The Easiest Gimbap Omurice Recipe Ever
Do you often find yourself with leftover gimbap? Instead of letting it go to waste or getting bored of eating it plain, transform it into a wonderful omurice! With just a simple sauce, you can create a satisfying meal. While it’s great pan-fried like a gyeranmari or stir-fried like fried rice, today we’re giving it a special omurice makeover!
Main Ingredients- 1 roll of Gimbap (day-old gimbap works well too)
- 2 Eggs
- 2 Tbsp Ketchup
- 2 Tbsp Cooking Oil
- Mayonnaise (for garnish)
- Parsley Flakes (for garnish)
Delicious Omurice Sauce- 5 Tbsp Tonkatsu Sauce (for sauce base)
- 1 Tbsp Ketchup (for a sweet and tangy flavor)
- 4 Tbsp Water (to adjust sauce consistency)
- 1 Tbsp Oligosaccharide (for shine and sweetness)
- A pinch of Black Pepper (to enhance flavor)
- 1 Tbsp Butter (for a rich, smooth flavor)
- 5 Tbsp Tonkatsu Sauce (for sauce base)
- 1 Tbsp Ketchup (for a sweet and tangy flavor)
- 4 Tbsp Water (to adjust sauce consistency)
- 1 Tbsp Oligosaccharide (for shine and sweetness)
- A pinch of Black Pepper (to enhance flavor)
- 1 Tbsp Butter (for a rich, smooth flavor)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare your leftover gimbap roll. Place it on a plate and use scissors or a knife to cut it into small, bite-sized pieces (about 1-2 cm). Try not to mash the rice too much to keep the texture. This helps the seasoning coat evenly when stir-frying, making it much tastier.
Step 2
Heat 1 Tbsp of cooking oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the cut gimbap and 2 Tbsp of ketchup. Stir-fry quickly, making sure not to burn the gimbap. Keep stirring with a spatula to prevent it from sticking to the pan. Once the gimbap grains are slightly toasted and coated with ketchup, it’s ready.
Step 3
In a separate bowl, crack 2 eggs and whisk them gently until well combined. Remove the chalazae (the stringy white bits) and whisk without creating too much foam for a smooth texture. You can add a pinch of salt, but the sauce provides enough flavor, so it’s optional.
Step 4
In a clean pan, add 1 Tbsp of cooking oil and heat over medium-low heat. Pour in the whisked eggs, tilting the pan to spread them into a thin, even layer. Once the bottom starts to set, gently stir with chopsticks to create a scrambled egg texture, or let it cook like a thin omelet. Be careful not to cook over high heat, as it can burn easily.
Step 5
When the egg is about 70% cooked and still slightly runny, place the stir-fried gimbap onto one half of the egg. Reduce the heat to very low, then carefully fold the other half of the egg over the gimbap to enclose it. Folding while the egg is still slightly undercooked helps create a neat shape.
Step 6
Now, let’s make the delicious omurice sauce! In a small pot or pan, combine all the sauce ingredients: 5 Tbsp Tonkatsu sauce, 1 Tbsp ketchup, 4 Tbsp water, 1 Tbsp oligosaccharide, and a pinch of black pepper. Add 1 Tbsp of butter as well. The butter will add a wonderfully smooth richness to the sauce.
Step 7
Place the pot with the sauce ingredients over medium-low heat. Stir continuously with a spatula as it heats up and begins to simmer. Once it’s bubbling, reduce the heat to low and continue to cook for another 1-2 minutes until the sauce slightly thickens. It’s important to keep stirring to prevent burning.
Step 8
Carefully plate the prepared omurice. Generously pour the warm omurice sauce over the top. The key is to cover the egg generously with the sauce for a rich, saucy finish.
Step 9
Finally, garnish with mayonnaise in a zig-zag pattern or any design you like. Sprinkle some parsley flakes on top for a colorful and attractive Gimbap Omurice. Enjoy this fantastic meal made from leftover gimbap!
