Easy and Foolproof Hayashi Rice Recipe
Hayashi rice is a go-to one-bowl meal in our household, right alongside curry! It shares some similarities with curry but is distinguished by its ketchup-infused flavor, offering a delightful tanginess without any spiciness. This makes it a hit with everyone from kids to adults.
Main Ingredients- 1 packet Hayashi Rice Sauce (store-bought)
- 1/2 potato
- 1 large onion
- A small amount of carrot
- 1 portion beef (or pork)
- 5 button mushrooms
- 3 Tbsp ketchup
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Dice the vegetables (potato, onion, carrot) into approximately 1.5cm cubes. Trim the stems from the button mushrooms and slice them vertically into quarters or sixths. You can use either beef or pork for the meat, but beef tends to offer a richer flavor. Cut the meat into bite-sized pieces.
Step 2
Heat 1-2 tablespoons of cooking oil in a pot over medium heat. Add all the prepared vegetables and meat, and stir-fry until the meat is browned, about 3-5 minutes. Sautéing at this stage enhances the ingredients’ flavors.
Step 3
Once the meat and vegetables are partially cooked, pour in 800ml of water. Cover the pot and let it simmer over medium-low heat for about 10-15 minutes, or until the vegetables are completely tender and have melded together. Keep an eye on the liquid level to ensure it doesn’t reduce too much.
Step 4
When the vegetables are fully cooked, it’s time to add the Hayashi rice sauce mix. To prevent clumps, either dissolve the sauce powder in a little cold water or broth beforehand, or pour it directly into the pot while whisking vigorously with a whisk to ensure it’s well combined. Continue to simmer over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally.
Step 5
As the sauce begins to thicken, stir in 3 tablespoons of ketchup. The ketchup adds a pleasant tanginess that elevates the overall flavor profile of the Hayashi rice. Continue to cook for another 1-2 minutes until it reaches your desired consistency.
Step 6
Your delicious Hayashi rice, steaming hot, is ready! Serve generously over a bowl of warm rice for a delightful meal that the whole family will surely enjoy.
