Main Ingredients

  • 1 block Tofu (approx. 300-350g)
  • 2 Tbsp Perilla oil
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 stalk Scallion (approx. 5g)

Tofu Seasoning Sauce

  • 3 Tbsp Soy sauce
  • 1/2 Tbsp Minced garlic
  • 1/2 Tbsp Gochugaru (Korean chili flakes, optional for kids)
  • 1 Tbsp Sesame oil
  • 1/2 Tbsp Toasted sesame seeds or sesame powder

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

To improve the tofu’s texture and remove excess water, place the block of tofu in boiling or cold water for about 5-10 minutes. Alternatively, you can rinse the tofu gently under cold running water 2-3 times for a cleaner result.

Step 1

Step 2

Let’s make the seasoning sauce to enhance the tofu’s flavor! In a bowl, combine 3 Tbsp soy sauce, 1/2 Tbsp minced garlic, 1/2 Tbsp gochugaru (if you prefer a little spice), 1 Tbsp sesame oil for its aroma, and finally, 1/2 Tbsp toasted sesame seeds or sesame powder for added depth. Mix everything thoroughly with a spoon until well combined.

Step 2

Step 3

Prepare the scallions to add freshness and color to your pan-fried tofu. Wash 1 stalk of scallion thoroughly and then chop it finely. Finely chopped scallions will make the dish visually appealing and add a pleasant flavor when sprinkled on top. You can also mix them directly into the seasoning sauce beforehand if you prefer.

Step 3

Step 4

It’s crucial to remove as much moisture as possible from the tofu before frying. Place kitchen towels over the tofu slices and press down gently. Removing the excess water will prevent oil splatters during cooking and result in a crispier texture.

Step 4

Step 5

Now, it’s time to cut the tofu into bite-sized pieces. Slice the block of tofu into rectangles, about 1.5cm to 2cm thick. Avoid slicing them too thinly, as they might break apart easily; maintaining a moderate thickness is key.

Step 5

Step 6

Lay a couple of layers of kitchen towels on a large plate or cutting board. Place the sliced tofu on top and sprinkle a tiny pinch of salt over the surface. This will lightly season the tofu and make it even more delicious.

Step 6

Step 7

Heat 2 Tbsp of perilla oil in a non-stick pan over medium heat. Once the oil is moderately hot, carefully place the prepared tofu slices in a single layer. Pan-fry the tofu for about 3-5 minutes per side, until golden brown and crispy on the outside, and tender on the inside. This creates the perfect crispy-on-the-outside, soft-on-the-inside texture.

Step 7

Step 8

Transfer the beautifully fried tofu to a serving dish. Drizzle the prepared seasoning sauce evenly over the tofu and garnish with the chopped scallions and toasted sesame seeds. Your stunning pan-fried tofu dish is ready! If you’re preparing this as a dish for children, consider serving the sauce on the side or omitting it altogether.
