With just a bowl of rice and a few fresh ingredients, anyone can whip up this delicious meal in no time. If you’re looking to enjoy both great taste and excellent nutrition, this recipe is for you! For the best flavor, choose a ripe avocado – one that’s just beginning to show a hint of brown rather than being a deep green will be perfectly soft and creamy. First, let’s master the art of preparing the avocado. Trying to peel it like a regular fruit can be surprising when you encounter its large central seed. Don’t worry, I’ll guide you through a simple and safe method to remove the seed, even for beginners!
Ingredients
- 1 ripe avocado
- 2 pollack roes (mentaiko)
- 1 egg
- 1 bowl of cooked rice
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Start by selecting a ripe avocado. Look for one that has a slight brownish hue, indicating it’s soft and creamy inside, rather than a deep green. Remove the stem, then carefully score the avocado lengthwise with a knife, cutting about halfway through. Be cautious not to cut too deep, stopping just before you reach the seed.
Step 2
Gently hold the scored avocado halves in your hands and twist them in opposite directions. They should separate cleanly into two halves, almost like magic! The key is a gentle twist, not forcing it.
Step 3
You’ll see the large, round seed nestled in the center of each avocado half. Our next step is to safely and easily remove this seed. The avocado halves will still have the seed in place at this stage.
Step 4
Now, for the seed removal trick! Take a sturdy knife and firmly embed the tip into the center of the seed with a solid ‘thwack’. You don’t need to use excessive force; just ensure the knife is securely lodged. Once the knife is in, gently tilt and twist the knife slightly upwards to lever the seed out smoothly.
Step 5
Voilà! The seed is removed cleanly, leaving the avocado flesh perfectly contained within its skin, like a little natural bowl. If the seed didn’t come out perfectly on the first try, simply repeat the process with the knife.
Step 6
It’s time to separate the creamy avocado flesh from its skin. A spoon is your best tool here. Slide the spoon between the skin and the flesh, scooping gently along the inside of the peel to release the avocado. This method keeps the skin intact while collecting the delicious fruit.
Step 7
Dice the scooped avocado flesh into bite-sized pieces. You can cut it into cubes or thin slices, depending on your preference. Prepare it in a way that’s easy to eat in your bibimbap.
Step 8
Heat a little oil in a frying pan and fry an egg. I personally prefer a sunny-side-up egg with a runny yolk, which adds a wonderful creaminess when mixed with the rice. However, feel free to cook it to your desired doneness, like over-hard.
Step 9
Prepare your cooked rice. Steaming hot rice is ideal for bibimbap. Spoon the desired amount of rice into your serving bowl.
Step 10
Now, artfully arrange all your prepared ingredients on top of the rice! Place the diced avocado, fresh pollack roe, and the fried egg over the rice. For an extra touch of flavor and visual appeal, you can sprinkle some shredded seaweed (gim) or sesame seeds on top. And there you have it – a stunning and incredibly simple Avocado and Pollack Roe Bibimbap! Enjoy your delicious and healthy meal!
