Giant So-tteok So-tteok Made with Johnsonville Sausages and Tteokbokki Rice Cakes
Making a giant So-tteok So-tteok flavored with a sweet and sour old-fashioned tteokbokki sauce.
Giant So-tteok So-tteok Ingredients- 3 strands of gara-tteok (rice cakes), cut into bite-sized pieces
- 3 strands of Johnsonville sausages, cut to a similar length as the tteok
- A little potato starch (for coating)
Sweet and Sour Tteokbokki Sauce- 1 Tbsp minced garlic
- 5 Tbsp gochugaru (Korean chili powder)
- 3 Tbsp oligo-syrup (adjust sweetness as desired)
- 3 Tbsp ketchup
- A little soy sauce (for added umami)
- 1 Tbsp minced garlic
- 5 Tbsp gochugaru (Korean chili powder)
- 3 Tbsp oligo-syrup (adjust sweetness as desired)
- 3 Tbsp ketchup
- A little soy sauce (for added umami)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare the rice cakes and sausages for skewering. Cut the gara-tteok into slightly longer pieces than standard tteokbokki, and cut the sausages to a similar length. Coat the prepared rice cakes and sausages evenly with potato starch. Coating with potato starch helps them achieve a crispy, fried-like texture when grilled.
Step 2
Skewer the starch-coated rice cakes and sausages alternately to form the giant So-tteok So-tteok. Heat a lightly oiled pan and place the skewered giant So-tteok So-tteok on it. Grill until golden brown on all sides, turning them gently to ensure even cooking. If the So-tteok So-tteok is too long to fit in the pan, you can cut them in half midway through cooking. The potato starch will make the exterior wonderfully crispy while keeping the interior chewy and delicious.
Step 3
Once the So-tteok So-tteok is golden brown, transfer them to a plate temporarily. Using the same pan, add minced garlic and olive oil over low heat to create fragrant garlic oil. Once the garlic is aromatic, add the gochugaru, oligo-syrup, ketchup, and soy sauce. Stir well to combine, being careful not to burn the garlic. When the sauce begins to bubble, return the So-tteok So-tteok to the pan and quickly toss them to coat evenly with the sauce, turning them over a couple of times.
Step 4
Finally, simmer for a little longer until the sauce thickens and clings to the So-tteok So-tteok, creating a sticky, glossy coating. Your sweet and sour giant So-tteok So-tteok is now ready! Serve immediately on a plate while warm, or enjoy them directly off the skewers for a convenient snack. This makes for a delightful treat that the whole family can enjoy together.
