Fresh Homemade Salmon Sushi
Make Salmon Sushi Easily at Home!
I found salmon on sale at Homeplus recently and bought some for sashimi! I absolutely love salmon, so I enjoyed it raw and also made it into delicious sushi! This recipe brings the delightful taste of fresh salmon right to your kitchen.
Sushi Vinegar Mixture- 1.5 bowls of cooked rice
- 1/2 Tbsp sugar
- 1 Tbsp rice vinegar
Ingredients- 276g salmon
- Wasabi (for topping) – a little
- 1/2 onion
- 276g salmon
- Wasabi (for topping) – a little
- 1/2 onion
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
The very first step is to prepare the onion. Thinly slice half an onion and soak it in cold water for about 30 minutes. This process helps to mellow out its sharp, pungent flavor, making it sweeter and more pleasant to eat with sushi. If you don’t plan on serving the sushi with onion, you can skip this step.
Step 2
Prepare the sushi rice. You’ll need 1.5 bowls of freshly cooked, warm rice. Add 1/2 tablespoon of sugar to the rice. The sugar will help season the rice and give it a beautiful sheen.
Step 3
Next, add 1 tablespoon of rice vinegar to the rice mixture. Instead of vigorously mashing the rice, use a spatula or spoon to gently mix. Imagine you’re ‘cutting’ the rice vertically, aiming to keep the grains intact and separate. Mix just enough so that the sugar and vinegar are evenly distributed throughout the rice, creating the perfect sushi vinegar base.
Step 4
Shape the sushi rice into bite-sized portions. It’s helpful to lightly wet your hands with water or vinegar to prevent the rice from sticking. Gently form the rice into small, oval mounds. Once you have your rice base, carefully place a small amount of wasabi on top, according to your preference. I’m not a big fan of wasabi, so I used just a tiny bit!
Step 5
Now, let’s prepare the salmon. Gently press the salmon fillet with a paper towel to absorb any excess moisture or oil. This keeps the salmon fresh and clean-tasting. Slice the salmon into pieces that are suitable for topping the sushi. I cut the salmon in half and then sliced it into pieces that were slightly thicker for a satisfying bite. When slicing the salmon, cutting it diagonally or against the grain will make it more tender.
Step 6
Finally, assemble your delicious salmon sushi! Place the prepared salmon pieces on top of the sushi rice mounds you made earlier. You can add a few slivers of the soaked onion on top for extra flavor and texture. And there you have it – beautiful, homemade salmon sushi! The remaining salmon was enjoyed as sashimi. I also used a store-bought sauce for dipping. Enjoy your culinary creation!
